Hi Kurchiecakes.

The Hydrogen electron brushed her long blonde hair, batted her eyelashes, and said to Florine in a panic, "I've lost my electron!"

Florine responded,"Are you positive?"

Hi everybody. :hello:
Hope you are all well.I only have time to pop in to say hi.I have to get up at 2 am tomorrow. 😱

Greetings, Zod. :wavingguy
That is ghastly early to get up. 😱
I'm fine today and hope you are well also. 😀 😛

Thanks. :ty:

I rather not talk about it if thats ok I am trying to forget today even happened. 😛

That's fine, Kurch. There are somethings things I don't feel like discussing, also. Good luck in forgetting what you need to forget.
😀 😛

I suppose as long as you dont have radioactive gas clouds floating by its not such a bad day to put things in the proper perspective.

Yes, that does put a good perspective on things. There are people in Japan now with severe damage to their homes, no electric power, and in danger of radiation poisoning. 😱

3 nuclear reactors are at risk for melting down or have already started to meltdown. A very serious situation there. 😱

Absolutely. And it's made worse by the damage to all modes of transportation there, making it harder to evacuate people. 😱

I suppose it would be very, very expensive to make a nuclear power plant that could stand up to a 9.0 Richter scale earthquake.

😀 😛

I took a course or two in radioactive chemistry, even toured a real live nuclear reactor. There are reactors called SCRAM reactors that wont meltdown. You can remove all the control rods and that just have a pulse of heat and then cool off. Problem with them is they are size limited and cant produce the power necessary for a big city.

The good news is these reactors are much better built then the one in Chernobyl. They are still a bit old like 1970's, but reactors aren't not like iPhones you just cant toss out the old one and upgrade. 😀

I never heard of SCRAM reactors. Very interesting, Kurch. 😀 😛

The one nearest me, at Indian Point, is also very old. 😱

The Chernobyl one was poorly designed. 🙁 Most reactors have a Liquid Sodium and Water cooling system so it either goes out it buys you some time to figure out what to do. Chernobyl was only water cooled I think. It had a host of other problems as well too but that was the main one.

I suspect even your old reactor is a 1000 times better then the one at Chernobyl. So I would not be too worried.

I just looked up some information online. 😀 😛

The oldest unit, Indian Point 1, began operation in 1962, but it has been decommissioned and had its fuel removed in 1976.

The two remaining units, Indian Point 2 and Indian Point 3, were built in 1974 and 1976 respectively, so they are not quite as old as I thought.

The three japanese reactors were built in 1972 by General Electric. So Indian Point 2 and 3 ones are a bit newer.

The old one with its fuel removed is likely not much of a concern now. 🙂

The article I just read makes clear that the whole point of building Indian Point 3 was to replace #1 which had given some trouble and was ordered to be shut down by the NRC.

😀 😛

It's a shame that Zod has to get up at 2am. 😱 Shades of your old job.

😀 😛
