Maybe it's because I'm older, I dunno.

I mean, when the whole SARS thing was raging, I was in Middle School and didn't really sweat it. I don't know if it's because I'm older now, or because people are dying or because I have a child...

But I'm super freaked. I'm thinking it's going to be at NEST and that I should recluse my son and all this other crap.

Is there any correlation to the SARS thing? I mean as far as the epidemic goes. We had SARS over here like we are having now with the Swine Flu, right?

Console me. :cry1:

I'll be surprised if we are still hearing about this in 2 months.

Really?? You don't think it's anything to be worried about?

Really?? You don't think it's anything to be worried about?

I wouldn't say that , it's something to worry about but the way the media is portraying it they are making it seem like the next Black Plauge . Just like Bella said , be observant as well if you think there is someone around you that possibly is sick move as far away from them as possible

Really?? You don't think it's anything to be worried about?

I think the media sometimes over hypes things like this. Is it something to be concerned about? Well yeah but I'm about as concerned as I am about any kind of disease. I have been more careful about washing my hands lately but I really don't share drinks with other people and though I'm not germaphobic, I am fairly conscious about unhealthy behaviors. I'm not really worried about it and I'm pretty sure that the media will find a new story next month. It is part of the danger of having 24 hour news channels and looking for stories to fill them.

Media SURVIVES by overhyping this sort of stuff. How far did SARS really spread, again?

Keep sanitary and you're safest.

It's a flu, too. You have far less risk than an old guy like me. Just don't go stickin' your fingers in your mouth, and avoid using your nuk before you sanitize it.

Stay off of trains and buses, and avoid casinos and food buffets.

If you're out in public, try to find a large fountain, remove all clothes, and then rinse thoroughly.

Stockpile at least 50,000 units of Tamiflu.

Always use tongs when opening mail.

Now is the time to take your plastic sheeting left over from the post 9/11 days and wrap it around your head.. make sure to duct tape it securely in place.

Kill any strangers that come within 100 feet of your house.

Keep a large knife handy in case you have to kill yourself before the flu gets you.

Avoid sniffing farts (this may not keep the flu away, but those damned things stink!)

If you absolutely must travel outdoors, do so encased in a man sized, clear plastic ball. You'll get good, hamster approved exercise, as you remain safe from any of those nasty germs.

from the information I've heard from other informed people, not the media, if this was going to be the global pandemic that it was hyped up to be, it would have been a monster by monday. since it's already wednesday, I think it won't be as bad as they say. however, some things do alarm me, one of them being that when president Obama went down to Mexico, the museum greeter who shook his hand died of Swine Flu the very next day. I believe the death toll in Mexico is way higher than in the US, which makes me fear for Texas and Cali. then again, check the respectable media sources for facts, and maybe I'm wrong.

but just in case, pick up some black elderberry, also packaged in Sambucol.

Here on the media they tell you to be careful, but it's not a reason for hysteria. Right now they believe it will not be any worse than any regular flu that comes around every year.

what about a swine flu infected zombie? that's like, a double threat.

zombies are dum anyway. ooh, we're walking slowly.

you have to be worried more about getting pneumonia or bronchitis.. for those are more around than the swine flu is.. just wash your hands often, dont touch your face or eat with out washing your hands first.

i realy dont want to get this eather i hate being sick but try not to worry to much about it like every one said the media alwas hipes stuff up and mnakes it out to be bigger then it realy is so just keep ya hands clean and try to realx everythi9ng will be cool

This is the best advice you could get, Jo. Do all of these things, and nothing can harm you.

I am as worried about contracting the swine flu as I am worried about being bitten by a zombie. :bwahaha:

Srsly.

zombies are dum anyway. ooh, we're walking slowly.

Uh, no huh. Some zombies are fast and smarterer than their slow and dumb counterparts. I think it was Dawn of the Dead that the zombies were fast, and Land of the Dead that the zombies were smartz. So shut yer ***** mouth! Don't underestimate zombies. It's always the underestimaters that get eaten first. 😵

Considering we loose over 30K people to “regular” flu every year, and now that the WHO is down playing the confirmed swine flu death toll, it’s appearing more and more to be media overreaction than anything else.

Only 7 swine flu deaths, not 152, says WHO

A member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims that more than 150 people have died from swine flu, saying it has officially recorded only seven deaths around the world.
Vivienne Allan, from WHO's patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths - all in Mexico - and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.
"Unfortunately that [150-plus deaths] is incorrect information and it does happen, but that's not information that's come from the World Health Organisation," Ms Allan told ABC Radio today.
"That figure is not a figure that's come from the World Health Organisation and, I repeat, the death toll is seven and they are all from Mexico."
Ms Allan said WHO had confirmed 40 cases of swine flu in the Americas, 26 in Mexico, six in Canada, two in Spain, two in Britain and three in New Zealand.
Ms Allan said it was difficult to measure how fast the virus was spreading.
She said a real concern would be if the flu virus manifested in a country where a person had had no contact with Mexico, and authorities were watching all countries for signs of that.
"There is no pattern that has emerged at this stage to be able to say that it is spreading in a particular way or it is spreading into a particular country ... the situation is continuing to evolve," she said.
She said the WHO was not recommending against overseas travel, but urged those who felt sick to stay home and others to ensure they kept their hands clean.
No decision had yet been made about vaccinations.
"This virus is not airborne, it's caused by droplets ... so it's not a time for worry. It's a time to be prepared," Ms Allan said.

Well I'm sitting home today with a banging headache, sore throat, ear ache, and a mean case of gastrointestional issues. I keep pushing this swine flu mess in the back of my mind, but must admit it's there nagging away at me. This was day 3 of a class I have to take this week with people from all over the state so I'm not very happy to be sick after being around them for 2 days.

I'm sure it's just a 24 hour bug of some sort. Both the kids had it a couple of weeks ago and thought my flu and pneumonia shots had thwarted off the threat. Guess I was wrong huh??

I have friends in Mexico, and most of them are scared. They tell me there is no dine in at any restauraunts and everybody is wearing a mask.

If you dont want to get sick, simply do what you always do when in the public

ROFL Thanks for the laugh.

AFA your concerns, Jo, having a child definately makes us take things more seriously. So, don't kick yourself. Swine flu is a concern mainly because it needs to be treated differently from other things. But, it's essentially like any other strain of flu virus. If we take normal precautions, we don't have to be overly concerned. If someone is ill, they should stay home so they don't spread things. If someone's out in public, they should follow normal infection control routines...hand washing, covering mouth when sneezing or coughing, etc. Common sense is our best defense against this as with any virus.

All of that having been said, I plan to have a supply of hand sanitizer and wipes on hand. Since I'm doing a workshop on massage, I'll be having folks sanitize before and after. That's something that's good to do even without the worry of swine flu.

Right now we are at phase 5 which is one phase short of pandemic. Masks and flu treatment drugs are on backorder and unavailable at the pharmacy I work at. They have closed 4 schools in CT as of today and there have only been 10 cases in our state so far.

We have sick people coming into the clinic in the store I work in all day and we are all terrified that someone will walk in with this strain of the flu and infect us all...

Sorry babe, I cant console you as I am quite a bit scared of this myself.

I was around for the first swine flu scare of 1976 and it turned out that the vaccine they came out with did more harm to people then the flu itself.

This is a different mutated strain that we have never been exposed to before, so we all have to be careful....

I heard about that on the radio this morning. The flu killed one person and the Vaccine killed 25 people.:rowfull:

All Vaccines are small doses of the actual virus. Its how your body gets immune

Yes there are dangers. But its realistically the safest bet other than quarantine. Either you slowly get sick by a small portion your body can fight or you get the full force and your body can't handle it.

Yeah, I know, but I still found it tragically hilarious.:jester:

I am so getting a lump of coal in my stocking this christmas.:cry1:

The vaccine in 1976 caused a paralyzing syndrome that killed some and maimed many more until they finally stopped giving it out. It had nothing to do with the flu itself but the vaccine used to fight it...The flu never spread to epidemic proportions nor kill antwhere near as many people..

Not a very safe bet in my book and I am glad that at the age of 20 at the time that I had sense enough not to get the vaccine...

I have never had a flu vaccine in my life and never intend to unless they can guarantee safety and effectiveness...they have struck a few times too many on both counts...
