Uber paranoid about this Swine Flu bullshit.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances, the weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until the muscles cannot be used at all and the patient is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases, the disorder is life-threatening and is considered a medical emergency.

This was what happened to many in 1976 after being vaccinated for the swine flu...

The masks do little, so wearing them to look like half of China and Japan during SARS is just funny to me. It's not protecting your eyes or ears, so I propose everyone immediately start wearing Darth Vader masks all the time. That I'd be on board with. 😀 Am I concerned, of course, as I don't like a cold, much less the flu, especially one we know little about, but availability of health care and pharmacies here is a lot different then in Mexico. 120+ of us are getting on planes, trains and automobiles to travel, in some cases, cross country to be with a large group of people, so super paranoid we're not.

PS If you do get it, no making out with me at NEST. :slapfight:

The irish worry prayer......

There are two things to worry about. Either you are sick or you are well. If you are well, there is nothing to worry about. If you are sick. There are two things to worry about. Either you will get better or you will die. If you get better, there is nothing to worry about. If you die, there are two things to worry about. Either you will go to heaven or you will go to hell. If you go to heaven there is nothing to worry about. If you go to hell, you will be so busy shaking hands with friends that you won't have time to worry.

I live in NYC, where kids in Queens were actually diagnosed with it. I commute with hundreds of people near me every day. I'm not elderly and I don't have a weakened immune system, so at worst I'd just get sick.

I wash my hands constantly anyway, but there's just no way to avoid the world.

there always has to be a LITTLE bit of caution when a new strain off flu comes out, but I am with everyone else....this is being blown way out of line at this point. Again if you are healthy and keeping your hands washed and things sanitary you will be fine!

The swine flu broke out back in 1976. My mom said she was vaccinated
for it back then. More than 10,000 people are killed in the US each year
by the regular flu, so this is really no better, no worse, than that. You'll
be fine. <3

Two relevant e-mails:
Dear Volunteer,

***This is an informational update only. This email is NOT a call for activation or response.***

As most of you are aware, the Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana area is currently addressing the swine influenza outbreak. As we watch this emerging incident, we would like the TMRC to do the following:

1. Assemble a preparedness kit for your family. If the TMRC is called out, volunteers are more likely to be able to help the response if their loved ones are prepared at home. www.ready.gov/america/_downloads/checklist.pdf

2. Practice proper hygiene and encourage others to do the same. Cover your mouth with your arm or tissue when sneezing or coughing, and throw any tissues away after use. Wash your hands often, especially after coughing or sneezing. If you feel ill, stay at home to avoid making others sick. www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/habits.htm?s_cid=swineFlu_outbreak_003

3. Stay informed. Read the CDC Swine Flu information available at www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ and watch your email for further updates.

Swine Influenza Virus in humans

Key Points for Veterinarians
• SIV is a zoonotic disease and appropriate precautions (including hand-washing, mask and gloves during necropsies, personal protective equipment such as N95 respirators and goggles, etc.) should be implemented to minimize the risk of infection and disease transmission.
• Increased awareness of suspicious cases involving pigs exhibiting influenza-like signs and particularly those pigs which have been previously vaccinated against SIV (although it is likely that commercially-available SIV vaccines will be effective against this strain since it contains the common HA genes).
• Submit diagnostic samples (lung tissues and nasal swabs) from acutely-ill, febrile pigs to the veterinary diagnostic lab if you suspect influenza.
• Work with producers to increase their awareness and ensure appropriate biosecurity safeguards are in place to prevent the introduction of this virus into the U.S. swine herd.
o Prohibit unnecessary visitors
o Employees with flu-like symptoms or symptomatic family members should not be allowed to contact pigs and should be encouraged to visit their family physicians
o Additional recommendations are available from the National Pork Board and are published on the AASV homepage (www.aasv.org).
• Information about the virus strain identified in the U.S. and Mexican cases:
o The virus is an H1N1
o A triple reassortant containing genes from two swine viruses, an avian virus and a human virus.
o The HA gene is the common gene seen in pigs today (H1). While not yet confirmed, it is likely that commercially-available SIV vaccines would remain efficacious.
o The NA and Matrix genes are of Eurasian descent and have not been seen in people or pigs in the U.S. previously.
o These viruses are not known to be circulating among swine in the U.S.
o There is no food safety issue – pork is safe to eat.
o 20 human cases have been confirmed by the CDC in the U.S. – none had any direct contact with pigs. Refer to the CDC website (http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/investigation.htm) for the most current official information.
o Mexican authorities are reporting a severe influenza incidence this year with hundreds of illnesses and multiple deaths attributed to a swine influenza virus.
o CDC has tested 14 isolates provided by the Mexican authorities. 7 of these have tested positive for SIV and are very similar to the viruses identified in the U.S. cases.
o The pathogenesis of this virus in pigs is unknown. USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) and National Animal Disease Center (NADC) will be evaluating the current diagnostic tests and conducting challenge studies in pigs to determine the virus’ virulence and clinical presentation in pigs.
o This viral strain appears to be transmitting from person to person.
o At present, the main effort should be to work to prevent the introduction of this virus into the U.S. swine herd.
• Key messages to keep in mind
o This virus is not known to be in U.S. pigs
o Pork is safe to eat.
o The virus is currently transmitting person to person and does not involve pigs for transmission.

If you are asked to comment on the situation and are uncomfortable with how to respond, please feel free to contact the AASV or the National Pork Board.

Bottom line, the morbidity and mortality rate are nowhere near as high as SARS was during its peak period. It's a slow news day...Britney hasn't done anything irrational and Christian Bale is behaving himself. I have heard whispers that this fall/winter expect more serous flu cases - the mutation of this thing is a bitch and makes me think getting an appropriate vaccine will be challenging if not impossible.

Girls that suck on pacifiers at NEST should use extra caution. Be sure to keep the binky clean, or better yet refrain from using them at all.:wiseowl:

Uh, no huh. Some zombies are fast and smarterer than their slow and dumb counterparts. I think it was Dawn of the Dead that the zombies were fast, and Land of the Dead that the zombies were smartz. So shut yer ***** mouth! Don't underestimate zombies. It's always the underestimaters that get eaten first. 😵

Everyone knows that in real life, zombies can't run. That's just Hollywood special effects!

Count up the number of deaths in first-world countries with decent health care, you'll feel a lot better. (Assuming you're in a first-world country with decent health care, that is.)

This whole swine flu thing smells sort of like media hype gone overboard.

Media hype indeed.

There's some high school kids in my area who are stoked by it, 'cause they have the week off, now. One kid contracted it. Oddly, he's fine. Press is more keen on hyping the panic - "While all four of the presumed Santa Clara cases have been relatively mild — none requiring hospitalization — health officials say they must remain vigilant because the virus could turn more virulent as it spreads through the U.S. population."

It "could". It's the same as in '76. Run around yelling "Don't Panic" at the tops of their lungs and wait for pandemonium.

Just read about it online. Give no money to the papers hyping it, nor to the products advertised during news segments about it. It's bad to feed the trolls, and scarin' the shite outta people is troll behavior...

Nah, we'll just make sure there's enough to go around! Mine are already packed and ready to go plus a few spares for my friends. But if you feel the need to keep what you usually suck out of your mouth for awhile, you go right ahead there Bill

I think that the swine flu is cause for concern and vigilance but not alarm. We all live in the world. There is no possible way for us to stay in our homes, not go out, to work, or the supermarket, or a movie theater, or resturant.

Proper precautions is the best advice. Trying to stay away from sick friends or relatives if possible, hand washing, etc.

I'm actually far more concerned for my mom, who is 71, and has Asthma and Emphaseyma, than I am for myself. If she heaven forbid gets the swine flu, she could end up in the ER or hospital.

All we can do is to practice vigilance and precaution. Hopefully, if we do that, the swine flu wont get any of us.

Mitch

Or..like my business partner said... since I'm in the more commonly "affected" group (healthy, middle age...whatever) and I have asthma...if I get it, I could die. People are soooooo depressingly pessimistic.

There's worry and worry. I think you should be aware that this is out there, but you need to keep the real risks in perspective.

The flu is dangerous mainly because it's so highly contagious. That is to say, it's dangerous at the population level: it can cause a lot of harm - yes, even kill a lot of people - because in a pandemic one hell of a lot of people will catch it.

But even so the fact remains that almost everyone who gets it will recover with no particular bad effects. Its mortality rate is high - for flu - but not very high at all compared to really deadly diseases like anthrax or bubonic plague.

Basically, the flu is all about quantity, not quality. This makes it a serious public health issue, but not very serious at all as a matter of individual health. This is something that the media can't convey very well, because it doesn't fit into a 30 second TV news story.

That's why I say there's worry and worry. A public health administrator needs to worry a lot about swine flu, because he or she is responsible for the health of lots and lots of people. But for you and your child it's just not that big a deal.

Chicago has a lot of swine flu cases. One in my exact neighborhood, which is fucking scary. I keep seeing it on the news everywhere and I've been feeling cold, achy, and sneezy. My dad made a joke about it being swine flu and now I'm fuckin' freaking out. Ha. It's probably all in my mind. At least, I hope it is, because I don't have insurance.

My huge zombie butt we can't run! i could whip you in a foot race anyday (provided my legs don't fall off)

Possible Plagues are always kinda scary. You kinda can't depend on news sources to give you an accurate depiction on how worried one should be about these things. Listen to your son's school, that's where you're going to find the best information. Squidlett's school sent a letter home stating there had been cases in the state but NOT in her district but urging parents to keep their kids at home if they have any kind of flu whatsoever. It also explained that if there were documented cases in the district they would shut down the school. I imagine it would be the same for your son's school as well.

Save your childish insults for your TMF radio show there Bella. I`m sure all 6 listeners would enjoy it.🙄

I guess it would be way easier for sick people just to stay away from the healthy ones instead of vice versa!

Here they put everybody who is suspicious of having it in quaranteen!

I'm too busy packing for NEST to be bothered with the likes of you. Consider yourself properly insulted, with witty and vaguely urban african-american overtones :slapfight:

Like I wrote earlier, relax. Even if it is H1N1 (the technical description of this influenza strain), the overwhelming odds are that you'll be just fine.

Again, the swine flu is dangerous mainly because it's just unbelievably contagious. That means it can potentially infect an enormous number of people - so many that even if it kills only a small fraction of them that will still add up to a lot of deaths.

But despite that, it does kill only a small fraction of those it infects - about 1 in 20 in Mexico, and so far fewer than that in the US.

I wrote in another thread that if it infects 1 American out of 4, and if it retains the same virulence it has shown in Mexico, then it could potentially kill about 500,000 Americans. That's a lot of people, but it also means that over 80 million of those who catch it will recover just fine.

500,000 vs 80,000,000. Even if you do catch this bug you'll almost certainly be OK.

I went out for a bit yesterday; I needed the fresh air after battling this crud I caught! There was this guy about 6'3", 300lbs walking around with a mask on! He looked ridiculous and he caught me looking (hell, I'm human). And this guy was dead serious; he said "someone around here has it and I'm not gonna catch it"! Now I think he's gone off the deep end especially since the only documented case in my state is somewhere either southern or southwest-both being a minimum of two hous away. It doesnt make it impossible, but really unlikely of coming here any time soon.

I still feel like I've been run over by a bus, but feel better today. So it's back to my class with people from all over my county in the hopes that none of them make me any sicker than I already am.
