what do you think are some underrated albums by some of your favorite bands

for me

Iron Maiden - i think Somewhere in time and No Prayer For The Dying are overlooked alot due to the fact the albums before and after them are more popular

"Music From The Elder"

KISS' Music From The Elder has to be mine.

The album was a critical and massive flop of many proportions and is one of a couple of KISS albums not to have achieved any awards or go platinum.

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have gone on record saying that if you find meaning to the record then we salute you because we didn't know what we were doing with this.

Basically in an attempt by the record label to make KISS look like credible and "serious artists" the idea was decided that they do a concept album. They made up a story that the album would describe how a young boy, through dedication, turmoils, confusion, and fear, overcomes evil under the guidance of a tribal group known as "The Elders".

When the album was released fans were basically like "WTF" when they expected to hear a hard rock album because that's what KISS was promising when they were preparing their next record.

Ironically, today many KISS fans say that this record is one of their best records; some even say that it is their best work. Songs from this album rarely made it to any live gigs and this album is virtually not recognized.

My favorite song from this record A World Without Heroes

Good question.

First off, I gotta go with 'Voodoo Lounge' by the Stones (1994). It was their best album since 'Some Girls', and while it wasn't revelatory, it does show that when they just go back to their roots, they still manage to sound better than about 90% of other acts playing. Plus, it contains one absolute masterpiece in Thru and Thru.

Also have to name Social Distortion's 'Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell' (1992), it was commercially popular, but tended to get critically overlooked as it came on the heels of their self-titled album in 1990, which was probably the most successful thing they ever did. In certain ways, I actually like 'Heaven and Hell' better, because it took the trends they were working with on the 90 album (moving more explicitly into cowpunk), and extended them even further, until it was basically a roots rock album.

There's others, but I gotta jet, I'll come up with more later.

I dunno about albums, but surely The Jam must be the most under-rated band of all time? I think maybe the fact they are labelled as a "punk" act turns up noses, which is a shame because their musicianship, lyrics, and just the feel of their songs really is fantastic. Probably the best British band since The Beatles (who, ironically, are the MOST OVERRATED bunch of sods in the universe! 🙂 )

You read my mind. Then again, I always did like you.:smilelove
XOXO

my other favorite band Bad Religion has a couple underrated albums

No Substance and New America are grossly underrated

AC/DC's album, Fly on the Wall is pretty good but unless you are a fan of their music, most others have no idea it exists.

I think I love you. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Ok, I respect The Beatles...but def overrated to the Nth. And yeah, The Jam can get the juices flowing if you can find em around. Sound Affects and The Gift were a couple of really good back-to-back albums. And yeah...they are far beyond the basic description of "punk".

Ok, so my fave underrated albums by my fave bands...hmmm....

Caress of Steel by Rush. They actually dubbed the COS tour the "Down the Tubes Tour". But, I found it to be a very enjoyable album. Very trippy, and the side-long concept piece The Fountain of Lamneth was a musical precursor to 2112; and lyrically/conceptually a foreshadowing of Xanadu. It's a really good little disc.

Good Trouble by REO Speedwagon. Nestled in between the monster Hi Infidelity and the "comback album" Wheels are Turnin', this album has got some POWERFUL songs on it. Some of Gary Richrath's most emotive solos and two of the most breathtaking power-balads of all time. Hell, I don't even know if they qualify as ballads, they're so strongly played. Give a listen to I'll Follow You and Stillness of the Night and tell me this album sucked. It gets very little play even among fans, but it's my second fave REO album behind You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish.

Season's End by Marillion. Caught between the end of the "Fish-era" Marillion and the acceptance of the Steve Hogarth-led band, this disc got a little forgotten among fans, with the notable exception of the powerful Easter. However, I really love this album and consider it one of Marillion's finest efforts prior to the ground-breaking Marbles.

Astra by Asia. The third Asia album, and the first without founding member/guitarist Steve Howe...basically the beginning of the end. Ironically, it was the guitar sound that made me like this album. The addition of the relatively unheralded Mandy Myers of Krokus was questionable at the time, but the mix of Myer's power-chord laden riffs with Asia's inherant "sound" made for some memorable tunes. It was crisply produced and the sound just leaps into your speakers. This disc is worth it for Rock and Roll Dream alone...recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Broadsword and the Beast by Jethro Tull. This disc can usually be found in the $1.99 bin, but there are some damn good tracks here. Some of Ian Anderson's most memorable and catchy flute riffs are ironcially on thier most forgotten album. Also, as many "classic rock era" bands did in the 80's, there was a heavy mix of synthesizers on this one, but Tull made it work. Of course, being a fan of old analog-synth sounds, I would have a prediliction for that, huh?

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

If it weren't for "This Was" and Tull's cover of "Serenade To a Cuckoo".....I wouldn't be listening to Roland Kirk today.

Underrated?..."Closer"- Joy Division
"Life Won't Wait"-Rancid
"Tim"- The Replacements
"Punk in Drublic"- NOFX

'Load' by Metallica. Even though it's not thrashy like the first four albums, there is just a consecutive line up of songs, beginning with 'Ain't My Bitch' through to 'Bleeding Me' that just rock!

'The Outlaw Torn' is a ripper of a tune too.

''Undoing Ruin'' by Darkest Hour

''Ascendancy'' by Trivium

''River Runs Red'' by Life of Agony

Any DKM album

The best $5.99 I ever spent on an album.

I only bought it for I'm Blue but the whole album is pretty good if you like keyboards.

The album is really good. Days Go By is a good song but not the best on the album.

Even among this band's many fans , Led Zeppelin's Presence doesn't seem to garner the accolades it so very deserves.

Well , alright ... check that. The song , Achilles Last Stand is definitely recognized & hailed ... but that's just because it's SO fCENSOREDing EPIC!

But the album as a whole is mostly overlooked. Boasting songs such as For Your Life , Nobody's Fault But Mine , & Tea For One , I struggle to see why that's the case.

Jimmy Page , in particular , is in TOP form throughout this underrated offering.

Garbage- Beautiful Garbage
XTC- Wasp Star
Radiohead- The Bends
Pixies- Bossonova
Joe Jackson- Volume 4

AGREED. FINALLY someone who agrees. Load was a badass album.

The Jam, wow nice. I'm kinda embarrassed to say I just heard of them within the month really, but I've been very impressed. The same way The Stranglers and The Clash are punk. It's not all Sex Pistols and Social Distortion.

Chili Peppers' first album, Mother's Milk. I think it's easily their best album. That certainly doesn't get the respect it deserves. I was so mad when they sampled Pretty Little Ditty for that worthless Butterfly (by Crazy Town, as I felt like looking it up) pop one hit wonder years ago.

It most definitely is not. Especially not Social Distortion, they're a bag of shite.

The Clash - Combat Rock I do liek. It is nice, and has much Joe Strummer.

EDIT: Madness also win, but I don't know any of their album names 🙁
