United States forced to reintroduce military draft?

I was skimming through the BBC News web site this morning when I came across a news article that mentioned that the idea of re-introducing the draft in America had been put forward. Somewhat surprised by this I thought I'd have a look around and found this:

http://www.nbc11.com/news/3025104/detail.html

Due to the deteriorating security in Iraq, the United States may be forced to reintroduce the military draft, a senior Republican lawmaker said Tuesday.
Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on post-occupation Iraq that there isn't an American that doesn't understand what the troops are engaged in Iraq and what the prospects are for the future.
"Why shouldn't we ask our citizens to bear some responsibility and pay some price," he said.
A draft, which ended in the early 1970s, would stretch the load of military service in Iraq more fairly among various social levels, the Nebraska Republican added.
Hagel says the U.S. must consider the draft because the military is stretched too thin.
Some critics of the U.S.-led war say military planners did not use enough troops to control Iraq, and that more military forces will be needed to restore order.

A bit more trawling turned up this editorial, written before the above comment was made (though I wish he'd let the more... inflamatory wording out):

The U.S. Selective Service Draft is Coming, Maybe Sooner Than Later

Sam Hamod

04/19/04 "ICH" As Professor and author Chalmers Johnson (Blowback and
Sorrows of Empire) pointed out in a recent interview on KPBS-FM on "The
Lounge" with Dirk Sutro, America has over 700 bases in over 123 countries.
This demands a lot of manpower.

Add to this that American generals are demanding more troops in Iraq and
Afghanistan, and that the wives and parents in the U.S. are upset at the
extensions of duty in those countries, as well as more and more National
Guards being called up to active duty outside of America, where normally
National Guard troops are not used-with many of the present servicemen not
re-upping, and you have a recipe for the dreaded Draft.

Now then, as everyone knows, President Bush would not want to call for a
draft until after the election, so as not to antagonize more of the public,
especially parents of and youngsters who would be drafted. But, as one
General Zinni and others put it before the invasion of Iraq, we do not have
enough men in uniform to cover the ground of Iraq for an occupation.
Clearly, with the Iraqis fighting back with an intensity that is much
stronger than the soldiers of Saddam when the U.S. invaded, not only do we
not have the troops to occupy, but at this point, because of the Iraqi will
and fighting ability, our troops cannot even control the resistance, let
alone take care of an occupation-unless GW sends in more troops.

So, at this point, GW is stuck between a rock and a hard place on the draft.
He actually needs to call for it now, but it would be political suicide. At
the same time, to keep extending the tours of duty of the men in Iraq and
Afghanistan is making him more and more unpopular with the service people
and with their loved ones back home. Many wives have gone public, as well as
parents who are now questioning the war itself because of the extensions of
duty being demanded by Bush and Rumsfeld. Though our government says it has
all the troops it needs; there is no way we can maintain the 700 plus bases
in the 123 countries and continue these two wars, and possible other wars
that may be started by Muslim and Arabs in other countries who are objecting
more strenuously to Bush's policies in Iraq and his new policies in
Palestine.

There is no doubt in my mind and in the mind of many other military men that
as soon as the election is over that Bush will call for a draft to replenish
the armed forces-that is, if he wins. If he loses, it's hard to say what he
might do. If the college students vote against him, he may just institute a
draft to punish them for their disloyalty to him.

After all, he may feel that right. As Bob Woodward pointed out in his
interview on 60 Minutes, last night, GW Bush said that he obeyed "a higher
father" (referring to God, as against consulting his human father about
going into Iraq). Actually, some politicos I've talked with today say he may
have also consulted with his surrogate father, Richard Cheney-who helped
push him into the illegal and immoral Iraq war, that now plagues him like a
swarm of bees as the Iraqis sting him with their resistance every day, and
his claims to be "spreading democracy" and "freeing people" become more
apparently hollow, deceptive and outright lies.

So, be prepared for the draft. And, I hate to say this, but it sounds from
Kerry, if he does win, he'll also want to fulfill the American cowboy macho
dream of winning in Iraq-then he might also institute a draft if he can't
get the UN to go in and take over.

As for Bush, he has little chance for the UN to take over unless he gives
them complete power; but, Bush is not likely to want to give up any
authority because he has such huge allegiance to Halliburton, Bechtel and
Brown and Root.

Sadly, your sons will pay the price for Bush's knavery with a draft.

So... I'm curious, how does this play in the US? I'm reasonably sure that there would by hysterical laughter from the general population if it was suggested here in the UK, followed by a resounding “ummm.... no” (at least for the current conflict) but one thing I've learnt over the last few years is it's bloody difficult to predict how the American public react to this sort of thing.

I actually read a similar story about this time LAST year too about re-upping the draft because the military is stretched to thin...
This comes up every time the US get into a "military action", I don't think the draft will be coming any time soon.

Although I am worried about our military being stretched to thin, I also don't think it would be a good idea to have drafted people out there next to the Marines that "wanted" to join the armed forces.

The other thing about have a draft is that raises the size of the "regular army" and that costs the government LOTS of money!!!
The US Government would want to keep the "regular army" at it's current size...I don't think the draft will happen..if it does...well I may not be the first to sign up, but I would go...

If the draft does come back,I wonder if it will include women this time? What I have always wondered is why only men have to register for Selective Service but not women

It would be rather ironic for a president more familiar with alcoholic drafts to reinstate a military one.... Given that the President and the majority of Congressmen don't have sons of prime drafting age, I wouldn't be surprised if such a move was made. Of course, we all know that the rich kids would either get to serve in the Coast Guard, go to college, or move up to Canada. A military draft is like another way of saying, "Hey, it's time to thin the ranks of our poor and middle class youth again."

Gen. Zod brings up an excellent point though.... Women should be required to sign up for the selective service, and they should also be susceptible to drafts. After all, that is the price of equality....

ROFLMAO Good call MrMacphisto One thing I find ironic is,during the Elder Bush presidency he got rid of the Selective Service act But when Clinton was in office he reinstated it Now how the hell can that draft dodging fool justify that?

Only in America can a draft dodger sleep in the white house while a homeless war vet sleeps in the streets :sowrong: Verie sad state of affairs

I agree with you, here. They've talked about this crap before, and we still have no draft, so I'm not anticipating one anytime soon, if ever again.

I also agree that it wouldn't be a good idea to put draftees in with voluntary service members. That would mean I'd have to deal with Privates, PFCs, and Lance Corporals that obviously don't want to be there, and they'd probably wind up becoming problem children that would have difficulty following orders and accomplishing assigned tasks. I don't have time for that crap when there's a job that needs to get done.

If by some tragedy Bush gets re-elected and our leadership continues to be made up of fools and criminals...

It'll be time for some civil disobedience.

seriously ~Rose~

Rose, would you have said hell no we won't go if casualties for American forces would have been high over in the former Yugoslavia shortly after Clinton sent American troops there? I am just curious It seems a lot of people are against Bush sending troops over to Iraq, but remain strangely quiet about Clinton getting us involved in a civil war over in the former Yugoslovia Thankfully nothing extremely bad has happened to our troops over there

As Rose said... It's apples to oranges... We did the Bosnia thing with U.N. approval... Entering Iraq was only approved by Halliburton and a few of our allies that trusted the deceptive claims of WMD that Bush's administration made.

Shooting from the hip, my reflex answer is very similar to what you said the reaction would be like over on your side of the pond, Steve. Incredulous amusment, promptly followed by annoyance. The American people are sick and tired of the rich of this country sending our children into third-world meat grinders to protect their investments. I can't say that a draft is impossible, but supremely unlikely, unless there were a cause that we BELEIVED in on the scale of WWII. And yeah, if they tried to bull it through and make it law without our approval, there'd be civil hell to pay. Americans are too well-armed to be dictated to. That's why they're trying to wean us away from our Constitutional rights gradually. We would need to be actually threatened from a great source from without to allow such a thing to happen, not just to fill the gaps that they're suffering because they keep sending our forces to places they're not wanted. Goddamn politicians. Bring our men and women HOME! Plus, look at who gets drafted! The POOR. The assholes who'd enact a draft have the means and are morally bankrupt enough to insulate themselves and families from having to serve. Coincidence? I think not!

A bit off topic, but not completely:
There are a myriad of reasons for this. Pretty much, I think when women are treated equally in all areas, you'll see it happen. Women still make less money than men for doing the same job. I doubt you'll see all women agreeing to equal military service when equal civilian lives are still not happening.

Plus, you have that whole "getting pregnant" issue. Until you stifle all sexual activity by both sexes and can ensure that neither are creating babies, you'll run the risk of uneven playing fields between the male and female military members.

Just a couple of thoughts.
