What was the last movie you saw?

Okay, since House on Straw Hill(1976) was so bad, I'm claiming 1932's Doctor X as my most recent view. Good shit if you're into the classics at all.

Just saw G.I. Joe with my son tonight. Great fun movie. So glad my son is old enough to want to see action flicks. Romantic comedies are great, but sometimes you just gotta see a 'guy' movie, ya know?

Very good recommendation, Rick, and I would add that if you liked Doctor X, you may also like its partner film The Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933). Unfortunately, the only DVD release is a bare bones version from 2004 with color adjusted to give the film a blue bias rather than green. That's a small gripe, though, and one with which most people won't (or don't) concern themselves.

THE HOLLYWOOD brother just saw the other day the goods starring many great actors. it is very funny and simple. if you are looking for a good laugh it is a good movie. if you are looking for something you never seen or heard then it is okay but overall it was a good time

I really wanna track that one down after seeing(and enjoying) Dr. X. Many of the same crew were apparently involved. I was especially taken with the set design work of the Polish genius who worked on Dr. X. His name escapes me at the moment, but he was involved with a whole slew of Hollywood greats.

Incidentally, I saw the technicolor version of Doctor X. There is also a b&w version, shot simultaneously. Normally, especially in the case of movies shot originally ONLY in black & white, I'll opt for the original over the colorized. In this case, I highly recommend seeing this movie in the original technicolor. It's really only shades of two primary colors, but it's done so ingeniously, it really adds to the atmosphere of the picture.

Good to know.

I've also seen it and I just enjoyed it. 😉

At the Silent Film Society of Chicago: Douglas Fairbanks, Sr (not Jr) in The Thief of Bagdad, complete with flying carpet special effects and the newly installed theater organ with elevating console.

I've both read and heard rumors that the set was somewhat inspired by the "death castle" of serial killer H.H. Holmes, but I'm not sure if I truly believe that. I too have seen the technicolor version (it came in horror classics DVD set with five other MGM/Warner films), but I know the black-and-white version has been on TCM in the past. According to the commentary, the b&w version is somewhat different--different shots, different dialogue/adlibs (due to redone takes with the b&w camera), etc. I'd very much like to see it one day.

And, yes, the two-color technique is so well-done that you barely notice that there are only two tones.

The Goods

I'm a big Jeremy Piven fan, because I love Entourage and I knew that the movie had to at least be pretty funny if nothing else.

WRONG!!!
Movie sucked, the theme didn't flow that smooth, and it really wasn't that funny at all.

Sorry Ari!

It's not only that, but they seemed to have artfully utilized the Technicolor to it's fullest potential in evoking an atmosphere of pure dread. That and certain specific scenes went a long way toward salvaging what was very nearly a disaster for all the wacky comedic touches.

I don't know this, but I'm willing to wager that Carpenter based a certain harrowing scene in his remake of The Thing on the climactic scene of Doctor X.

Thanks for that little tidbit about the H.H.Holmes-connection. They sure didn't bring that up on the commentary track I listened to. Well, honestly, they may have, as i was preoccupied for whole chunks of it...

That would be the proposal, and gonna go see the time traveler's wife 2morrow 🙂

I watched a b&w Italian film from 1966 called variously The Witch, The Witch in Love, Aura, La Strega in Amore and even more aliases. Apparently(according to the IMDb trivia), the author of the original tale wasn't very happy with this adaptation. I can't really speak to that, as I've never read the novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I'm hesitant to add more, as i feel it's the sort that's best taken in as i did - with virtually no idea of the story prior to watching.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen!

It was a delightful wave of nostalgia! ^_~

Tod Browning's The Show. I'm on sort of a Browning kick after reading about his curious life in The Monster Show. I even went so far as to trim my moustache in the same dapper fashion as his.

the last entire movie I saw was Die Hard.I absolutely loved it and it was kind of funny with John McClane's little wise cracks.

I don't watch movies too often...but I'm trying to. I think the last movie I watched was Harry Potter: and the Half-Blood Prince with my grandparents. It was a bit annoying because I was finishing the book and I'm one of those annoying critical people who compares the movie to the book like crazy.

It wasn't unenjoyable, just disappointing that they removed entire plot lines. It wasn't nearly as much a mutilation as Order of the Phoenix. That one was just sad how badly they tore it apart.

I'm hoping to see Book of Eli with my fiancee soon 😀 I love Denzel Washington! (<3 Man on Fire!!!!)
