Which Vehicle should I get?

Kind of a broad question, but here goes..

My current car is in the midsts of getting repaired right now. It's a 91 Corsica, 20 year old car. It was a good car for the past 2 years I owned it, but i've decided that it's time for a new car.

Now I plan to keep the corsica for at least the next few months, possibly until march/april. Now the question I have for you all is, What car should I get? If any of you all have suggestions as to what brands are popular, or do well, let me have them. A few things here:

1. Let's say i'll be getting a refund back from my school, and I intend to save this money towards my new vehicle..

2. I'm looking for cars that are generally under $8,000 at least. New or used is fine with me. Now before you ask, yes I know that prices vary between state and county, so spare me that. Again, if you have any suggesions, i'm all ears..

Update: The Cylinder head gasket of my car is gone, and it's expensive to replace, so within the next few weeks, i'll be looking for a new car..

(Like I know what I'm talking about....)

Chevys are good, I think some of them are the best in collisions :banghead:

I was told to use the Consumer Reports ratings for cars,

there's a special issue every year I think, probably April --

(which I was told also might be the best month to buy a car -- Edit ---- so it's good you're waiting till then!! 🙂 )
I was also told to check the library for it if it's not available online, they might have that mag

and for Kelley's Blue Book for prices for (new and?) used cars if I remember correctly ---- (sp?)

And I was told the best bet is to buy a "slightly used" car since the value tanks (yeah, yeah, no pun 😛 )
as soon as you roll outta the dealership if it's brand new.... :disgust:

THREE FREAKIN' FEET past the curbline and you're DOWN $3,000.00......

But it's also nice to buy a new car, and maybe you risk buying someone's lemon if it's used,
but if you have a good enough warranty (which you should obviously, and from a well known dealership)
then the risk is far less buying a slightly used car

(what is WITH that stuffy "PRE-OWNED" crap.... 🙄 )

----since some people do trade in cars so quickly, after just one year, they get bored or whatever,

or they lease -- that might be better, I don't know -- with option to buy?

Just avoid Fat Albert's car 😛 A V6 or V8 engine should kinda suffice...

Personally I'd say just go for the Hot Pink model :yayzorz::yayzorz::yayzorz::yayzorz:

Sorry, you can get the BACKISSUE of the last Consumer Reports for best cars & prices --- I think for used cars too ----- at your library, they should keep at least a year back & my friend told me those special issues are kept separate or preserved or whatever
since that's a common problem

Or check online for "best new/used cars" and if you have to pay to subscribe, check the library, they probably have the actual mag

I'm a lot into cars. Now I know you told us to spare you the state/country thoughts, but I can't help it, because I can actually help you if I knew your location. European and American car markets vary a lot. Still, giving some blind advice, I suggest you check out the Asian brands, especially Honda. Don't look up Toyota, as they turn out to be a bit crappy, mainly the newer models. Another great car is Volvo. They don't break down easily, they are comfortable and most of their models are really spacious. So I'd stick with those two, but if you could share some more info on what exactly you're looking for, I could be of a lot more help 🙂

I'm biased, but I would look for a used, lightweight pick-up truck (Chevy S-10, Ford Ranger, or Dodge Dakota, for example.). You can find a decent lightweight truck for about the price of a car. Trucks retain their blue book value better than cars do, and I'd recommend "used" for the same practical reason stated above. You'll be saving money on an already degrading investment (You can't get NEW lightweight trucks anymore, anyway, because all manufacturers have gone to mid-size and larger gas guzzlers, with crew cabs and tiny beds, projecting the image of being an American truck owner, without having the utility. :sowrong: ). Another advantage to lightweight is that you'd either have a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder (I'd go the 6, otherwise there's not much of a point in having a truck.), which would be better on gas than a v8. Trucks also give you utilitarian advantage. You won't have to pay delivery fees when buying new furniture or appliances, which will save you about 50 bucks whenever you buy something big (which is great until your friends want you to help them move! That is, unless you charge them, or tell them to buy you a case of beer, or something.).

Well, since you asked so nicely, i'm from Durham, North Carolina. I'm looking for a Sedan-Type vehicle. But as far as which brand, i'm still narrowing down my list...

Yeah, I thought you were from the US, but still had to ask. Well, I am not very well informed on the American car-market, I'm better on the European one. So, I can't help ypu with a lot of information on, let's say Chevy or Buick or Dodge or something like that. Anyway, I don't want to repeat myself, but you should really check out the Asian brands, as they are by far the best on the market for me. Look for a Honda Accord, if you can find one and the price is right, try it. If you decide to go for a European make, the only cars I'd suggest are the German ones- BMW, VW and Mercedes. The first two are not bad at all, but the best is the Mercedes. Cars made by them before 2004 are considered eternal. Those made after 2004 are still very good, but they are a bit more expensive, and not so flawless as the older ones. It is quite strange, but there is a tendency in Europe that newer cars break down way more often than older ones.:bugeyed: Some people think it is strange, but for me it's perfectly normal. The cause of this is simply the over-production of most manufacturers. They want to make and sell as many cars as possible, thus making their models rather weak. I personally also have an almost brand new car( less than two years old) and at least every 3-4 months a have to get it repaired, which is actually hilarious, because i have an older car too, which gives me no problems whatsoever, except oil change and so on. Well, that's all from me for now, I hope you make a wise choice and get a nice car 😉

I second what me4o said. My last American car (which was actually outsourced by Chrysler and therefore not really American) was a nightmare. It's no accident that a lot of the really old cars on the road (talkin' the late 80's and the 90's here) are Toyotas, Nissans and Hondas. Even these venerable brands have lost some of their mojo, as the recent spate of Toyota recalls has shown, but I'd still take them in a heartbeat over any car made by an American company which needed a government bailout in order not to disappear off the face of the planet as they rightfully should have, the livelihoods of thousands of autoworkers notwithstanding.

Volvos are (or at least were) a good bet as long as you knew someone who could fix the darned things!

These are all good suggestions people. Now I want to know: What questions should/do I ask when I go to look for a car? It's my first time buying, but don't worry, I will be taking someone with me....

Again I'll be the first to answer 😀 First of all, you should know how many miles/kilometers has the car passed. In a lot of places, car dealers or even regular people who sell their car tend to rewind the actual amount of the distance passed. It's hard to find out, but not impossible. Second, you should check if the car has been hit. A good painting job can hide this, but if you look carefully, you're sure to see if there have been any crashes. Third, you should see if there are any leaks from under the car- oil leaks, water, so on. Fourth, you MUST ask for a test drive. That is actually the best way to find anything wrong with the car. If they don't let you drive, ask at least for a ride. That way you'll notice if there is any trouble with the engine, transmission, electronics...anything. Well, I think that's about it-if I think of something else I'll let you know 😉

... but i've decided that it's time for a new car.

If any of you all have suggestions as to what brands are popular, or do well, let me have them.

Get one that transforms into a giant , ass-kicking robot.

Them cars is tits.

Why bother with cars? Bikes are much better 🙂

I'm Back!

Well, I narrowed it down, and one of my main choices is the Chevrolet Malibu. Dealership near me has them between $9000-$11,000 just the price range i'm looking for...

That's excellent!! 😀 I heard they're among the best in test results for head-on collisions :frustrated: , so I hope you never find out  but it's good to have!! 😛

Seriously, they're supposedly built very well, the friend who got one is happy so far
