Who Watches The Watchmen?

Don't get your hopes up. It's going to be terrible. They're making ridiculous changes. It's clear they don't get the point - they're turning into an actual superhero movie.

Care to expand on that? According to Kevin Smith, the only major change that was made was the ending concerning Ozymandias' method to save the planet. Aside from that, Smith said the movie is practically taken panel by panel directly from the comic.

THere is so much depth and detail and prescence in the comic that it's hard to imagine they could ever make the movie live up to the book, short of having it be four hours long and have a cast of sure-fire Oscar contenders. That being said, yes I'm going to see this movie with as open a mind as I possibly can.

Do I expect it to live up to the book? No. I'm just hoping for 'as close as they can get'.

Incidently, they are also leaving out the Marooned 'comic-in-a-comic' for the theater version. It will be included on the DVD.

Snail Shell

Judging from the trailer it looks pretty good to me. However Rorschach's mask bugs me a little. As I recall the material is supposed to be "viscous fluids between two layers of latex." The movie mask didn't seem to convey that. Nitpicking, I know.

Like most movies about previously-respected source, a bit of suspension of disbelief is necessary. It's ESPECIALLY true where fantasy is in the writing.

Watchmen was exceptional in that it humanized much of the superhero mythology. They had faults and social habits we can identify.

If the movie pulls that off, and keeps even CLOSE to the story, I'll be SO impressed.

I'll still be pissed about every deviation from a good story, though.

I really want this to be good, but I'm not optimistic about it. They've never made a good Alan Moore adaption, and this seems like the one least likely to be do-able.

I'm hoping for a great movie, but I have the feeling we're all in for a disappointment.

I just recently read the novel for the first time, and like just about everyone, thought it was wonderful. I hope they manage to do it justice.

Well...

...the toys look cool...

I noticed one of the songs they are going to use was also in a Batman movie. I hope they don't do that whole body exaggeration thing though like in a lot of movies. The costumes were meant to be cheesy as if mimicking what we/they saw in comics to bring it to real life. But the majority of them were still regular guys and girls. (Didn't the one complain he didn't want her anymore because her 'tits sagged'?)

Ozymandias' plan has changed yes. It's changed to the extent that the new version literally makes no sense in the setting of the book (protracted Cold War), which means they will have to make other changes to compensate or leave it making no sense.

They've also changed several costumes and characters, making them all sleeker, younger, and more attractive, which is completely contrary to the point.

Like Snail Shell said, the book is made great by the depth and detail which is impossible to cram into a 120 min movie. I'm betting strongly that it will = fail.

This movie wont even be shown unless fox and warner come to an agreement

So how much will warner pay?

I fear they'll try and focus on the action sequences at the expense of some or a lot of the character development. It'll be interesting to see how they'll incorporate the bits like Nite Owls memoirs since they fleshed out the world quite a lot. Maybe they wont bother or maybe we'll be treated to a lot of painfully obvious exposition.

I heard they changed Rorschach's flashback as well (the one where he handcuffs the guy and sets the building alight). I might be wrong though.

Rumor has it that Fox is after the rights for the old Batman tv show DVDs. That's supposedly what Fox is raising a stink over the Watchmen for. They want to be paid off with Batman.

It wouldn't even be an issue if Warner had thought to use the shark repellent bat spray when the lawyers showed up.:jester:

I will wait until it is out a week before I decide if I want to see it in the theater or wait to rent it.

If I get the chance to see it, I'll watch it.

It'd better be good.

But I just don't see how it can be as good as the novel.

Actually, though Warner Brothers owns the rights to the Batman franchise, the old Batman tv show was made and owned by Fox. That's why the show hasn't been released on dvd yet.

It's a movie, brother. You can count the number of movies that are true to their original novel on your fingers. Lord of the Rings movies were pretty good, but even then... There's no way I'm buyin', given the age diffs and change in base plot, that this will be more than amusing. It would have ROCKED if they used the right ages and the same plot, even with the gratuitous violence additions, IMHO.

True.

Watchmen is/was also a 'cold war era' novel.

So I'm curious to see how they attempt to 'make it modern' or if they even try.

Basically, I want to see how bad they eff it up.

But I hope they don't, I REALLY don't.

Yeah, but I dug Sin City on paper FAR more than the movie. I liked the flick, so my hopes are up.

'Sides, Kevin Smith rocks...

No need to worry Cy/MiG. The movie will take place in 1985, same as the book. Its not set in the modern day.
