Woe Canada

eh it seems to happen all the time when teams win or lose championships, it would have probably been worse had they won

Didn't happen when the Argo's last won the Grey Cup, and I don't think it happened when the Blue Jays won back to back World Series. That't why Toronto is the back bone of the country, we out class pretty much ever other major city (all 4 of them LOL).

i have no idea about the grey cup? I know what it is, but is that a big deal in Canada, or do more follow the NFL?

Think of the Grey Cup and the CFL as equivalent to the NCAA in terms of love towards it - though it sure isn't as messed up as the BCS ranking system.

Though I've made my opinion of the whole situation known in other threads, I'm glad to see that something is being done anyway, both in regards to support and enforcement.

Though darkharp...when I saw the pic of that couple kissing and saw that one was Aussie and one was Canadian, I thought of you and Mantis but then I gave my head a shake and remembered you writing somewhere that he was a New Zealander. 😛

When the Rangers beat Vancouver No Riots in NY... When Boston beat Vancouver No Riots in Boston... Riots is Vancouver both times... Canada and the US one and the same???

I've seen plenty of riots here in the US as well. And all over the world as a matter of fact. Kind of silly to blame an entire county on a few idiots in ONE city...

This.

It's also happened on a smaller scale in Montreal. Toronto has always been peaceful, win or lose.

I lived downtown when the Leafs were one goal away from the Stanley Cup Final with the Montreal Canadians in 1993. With each win, impromptu parades would fill the streets. Peaceful every time. And when we lost to LA in Game 7? (Damn you Gretzky and Kerry Frazer :jester:), the city was upset but everyone came together to congratulate our boys on a fantastic run... PEACEFULLY!!!

And our celebrations for the Blue Jays of 92/93 were also joyous, jubilant... and yes, PEACEFUL.

I too am disgusted by what transpired in Vancouver, but I don't ever see that happening in Toronto.

Which is a target no matter where its held in the world... people target those things. It wasn't Torontonians 😉

Well, maybe not all of them.

Most of the rioters last week weren't from Vancouver. The RCMP have stated the instigators were organized Anarchist Groups from out of town.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where or why a riot starts, it's rarely representative of the majority population.

I'm sure most people around the world, especially in Canada, appreciate that the G20 riot wasn't conducted, encouraged or supported by Toronto or it's people. Same goes for Vancouver.

Honestly I'm surprised how quick some Canadians here (not you, leafstk) have been to condemn Vancouver and it's people based souly off what little they seem to know. Prior to reading some of the posts in the 2-3 threads about this, I would have thought Vancouver's fellow Canadians would have been less torches and pitch forks, and more supportive. In my experience, while they may not show it off as boisterously as some countries, Canadians are generally a fiercely patriotic people, but it seems there are exceptions to every rule (again, not you leafstk, you seem to be a perfectly pleasant and proud Canadian)

Unless there's another G20 Summit... 😉

The G20 summit troubles weren't caused by people from Toronto. Most of them were idiots from other places. Even the cops who are in shit for their actions are believed to be from out side Toronto.

The Grey Cup is 100 years old this year, and is one of the oldest championships in Pro Sports. The fact that more Canadians don't support the CFL simply shows how self deprecating many of us are. Our mayor is dead set on bringing an NFL team to Hog Town, but the truth is that's a joke. We already have a loser Baseball team, and a loser NBA team, and I suspect neither of them bring in allot of money. If Toronto brought in an NFL team I would give it 3 years before the appeal wore off, and it was losing money. Only one team in Toronto is aloud to suck, and that's the Leafs, and boy have they mastered that.

In Canada, they riot over hockey losses.

In America, we riot over racial tension.

I agree that it was only started by a few terrorists, who came just to make trouble.

Here is a letter that published in the local papers.

All those who instigated and participated in what happened last Wednesday, were simply “urban terrorists” and when caught, should be charged to the fullest extant of the law, under “The Canadian Anti-Terrorism Act.”

First on the list should be Brock Anton, and charged to the full extant of the act as well. Mr. Anton and others came downtown with the specific intent to cause trouble and terrorize downtown. As a result, the police were paralyzed, the fire department was paralyzed and transit was paralyzed and so in my view, the city of Vancouver was “Terrorized”

I hope that the police make those terrorists who were wearing Canuck jerseys trade them in for prison uniforms and wear those uniforms for a very long time.

We need to deal with these people to the fullest extant of the law, and make sure that this doesn’t happen again. We need to show them that Vancouver belongs to all and not to them!

You hardly ever see this anymore or at least not as much in celebrations in the US after or during big events or at least championship pro events. These things don't happen just because. In most cases a huge police presence with a logistic psychological approach to crowd control is used to combat this. After the Giant's fan was attacked at Dodger Stadium they are now starting to do this at regular season games. These techniques have been used at New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square for many years and has produced few problems in regard to crowd control.
