Wrestling Fans: Who is your favorite wrestler of all time?

I should include:

Greg "The Hammer" Valentine

and

"Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorf

to my list. Those were 2 of the first guys I was really impressed with when I first started watching wrestling.

Surprising you dislike Flair so much. I always thought he was the best ever at taking a beating and making his opponent look good. Having played the heel most of his career, and the "privileged playboy" at that, fans always loved to see him "get his" by the hero of the moment.

I don't like him because he was just so fucking irritating! Same as Shawn Michaels. Brilliant performer, complete arsehole as a character. The Rock entertains me and echoes some of the character traits I'd use myself if I were ever to try and build my own character. Wise-arseing, stare-downing, pec-jumping badass! Flair and Michaels were just aggravating shitheads. (Again, I refer to the characters, not the men.)

The night I spent 16 quid on the One Nite Only PPV and he took the European Title off Tthe British Bulldog in the main event, helped by Chyna, Rick Rude and HHH, I nearly hurled the TV clean out of the window. And just how crap is it to only have Owen and Bret run to the rescue only after he'd lost the match?

The biggest clue to the child Jim about how orchestrated and scripted the business was, was the utter incompetence and gullibility of the referees; in particular, Earl Hebner. Gormlesness such as displayed by him could only have been part of a script. Selective blindness on his part to a degree that would make Stevie Wonder shake his head included when the Ultimate Warrior lost the WWF title at Royal Rumble 91, the Hart Foundation losing the tag titles at Wrestlemania VII, Bret Hart losing the WWF Title at Wrestlemania IX, Mr. Perfect being denied the IC title at Summerslam 93, more matches involving shawn Michaels and Ric Flair than even an astronomer could count and the very real life screwing of Bret Hart at that infamous Survivor Series match against Shawn Michaels.

The night Shawn beat Davey Boy he managed to completely miss three guys (and I mean GUYS) battering him outside the ring. It just took so much believability out of it. Even though you know it's scripted, it's got to be believable to a point. You've got to grab the audience by the balls and have their hearts and minds follow. That night just sucked!

The crowd weren't too chuffed either. Shawn was leaping up and down on the stage like a monkey with a toffee-apple up it's arse and waving the Euro belt. It was a perfect display of antagonism, such as few performers could have pulled off. The crowd responded with a bararge of bottles, hotdogs, beer, coins and spittle.

Singles or Tag Teams?

I am from the Hart City, so I am very biased to dungeon-breds - like Chris Benoit, Bret Hart, Lance Storm. Also lay fandom of Stone Cold, Undertaker, and Superfly Jimmy Snuka.

Tag teams - Hart Foundation, the Headbangers, and Demolition.

What ever happened to Paul Roma? A completely underrated talent. He and Hercules Hernandez should have been constant contenders as Power and Glory.

Typing this while Austin is blathering away on Raw ... you're not a wrestler any more, man, shut the hell up sometimes ...

Anyway, Roma. Kind of an interesting story there. At Superbrawl V (1995), Roma was scheduled to wrestle Alex Wright and lose to him, as WCW's management thought Wright was going to be a big name in the future. (He wasn't, but then no one ever accused WCW of being clever.) Roma, for reasons of his own, decided to make Wright look bad in the match, mocking him, no-selling everything he did, and even kicking out of his finisher, even though the ref counted three anyway. After that performance, nobody wanted to work with Roma again, and WCW fired him not long after. For all I know, he's still out there on the indy scene.

As for my favorite wrestlers: Mick Foley, without a doubt. Plus Al Snow, Kurt Angle, RVD, Eddie Guerrero, and the late lamented Owen Hart, as well as Aja Kong, Bull Nakano, and Akira Hokuto from the world of joshi.

The Japanese guy who injured Hogan...

....was named Hiro Matsuda (on tv, I can only assume its his real name). Before Lex Luger was in WCW/NWA, he started his career in Florida, and I have always read that Matsuda trained him as well. And someone a little older is welcome to correct (especially some of the wrestlers here), but I believe Hiro fueded with Johnny Weaver and had "Battle of the Sleeperholds" matches. Im only 28, but wrestling has been on tv in my house for as long as I can remember. My favorites:

Ric Flair
Minnesotta Wrecking Crew (as wrestlers, Ole was an awful booker)
Scott Steiner
Great Muta (or Muto, if you are in Japan)
The OLD Legion of Doom
The original NWO (actually despised Hogan until the heel turn)
Ricky Steamboat and late Jay Youngblood
Nikita Koloff (the Russian nightmare was from Minnesotta)
Vader (Leon White) during his squash run in WCW
Acolytes
Kurt Angle
Chris Benoit
Eddie Guerrero
Jerry Lawler
RVD (the real RVD, not the watered down version WWE has created)
Sabu

and the list goes on and on. But Ric Flair is my absolute favorite.

Some? Heh heh. There's only one. I only had a small handful of matches over one summer, so Laz gets centre stage. Kind of like joining the army, but DOR'ing after a few weeks.

Odd that the words "awful booker" and "Ric Flair" should be mentioned within two lines of each other. 😀

Seeing all the replies to this has brought back lot's of memories. I can remember when I was younger and The Enforcer Arn Anderson told me to f off because I called him a punk and Dusty Rhodes owned him. Any true wrestling fan had to love the 4 horsemen Ole,Arn,Tully, and Rick. As far as tag teams back in there day They would snack on danger dine on death and dead men don't make money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The LOD with Precious Paul. I also love now The A.P.A. who I'm glad are back together. THE ROCK is my all time favorite however. No matter what he does he is always going to be SIMPLY ELECTRIFYING!!!!!! Hope he comes back soon cause he has some unfinished business with Goldberg and after he blows through him then he needs to go back to Smackdown and beat the bloody hell out of Brock Lesnar unless Pittsburgh's own Kurt Angle does it first. b.t.w. Kurt is a very nice guy. Before he even went to the WWE he worked out at the gym I belong to and even now comes in when they are in town. Some of the wrestlers I'd seen were Steve Blackman, Kane and he's huge. Hardcore Holly, Scotty to hottie and last but not least Chris Jerico. He's not very big in person but he can whoop some ass!!!!!!! One more who I can't ever forget is Stone Cold what? I said Stone Cold what? what? what?

C'mon Big Jim...

...Flair is probably one of the best wrestlers that has the ability to dominate a match on one hand and make anyone look like a superstar on the other. Remember, he let Ricky Morton pin him. And I wont even delve into the Ronnie Garvin title run 🙄 .

Your point is well taken cocnerning the Ric Flair "booker" comment. Notice I said favorite wrestler. If someone forced me to name the best booker, Jerry Lawler was good. So was Jerry Jarrett. Johnny Ace also ranks up there in my opinion (writes some of the best finishes, or used to anyway).

This thread conjured up lots of memories of watching matches when I was a kid. And although alot of us liked different guys, it was cool to have an intellegent conversation without it becoming a Wrasslin' debate. Thanks to everyone who is participating!

I can't believe I forgot to mention George "The Animal" Steele. He was definetly one of my favorites, although I hated when he eventually started to talk.

I hear a lot of people say he was good, so I suppose it must be true. PErsonally I thought he wasn't anything special. He was talented and worked hard, but that stagger and self-inflicted flap-jack of his was diabolical. Owen Hart used to do that, but he did it deliberately to be funny. Flair really thought it looked good.

As for his booking skills, well it was with the help of poo like that, that WCW stunk up the continent. WCW had the money, the talent and the set-up. But it was utterly devoid of any artistic talent. Weird and wonderful plots and matches from people like Flair and Dusty Rhodes sunk the company. (That and the fact that their main competition was CEO'd by the most competitive, destructive, treading-under-foot, merciless and sadistic bastard ever to run a company. And those were Vince's GOOD points!!! 😀)

Remember to sprinkle some salt there mate. 😉

Yeah, the same thing happened with Glenn Jacobs. He used to be frightening because of his lack of voice and face. He isn't half as believable now, especially as he was third string for about three years in the meantime.

Yeah, I really dug Glenn Jacobs "Issac Yankem" character, Jim. Especially the promo he cut with Jerry Lawler when The King was in cahoots with him. SOOOOO sadistic!

Pink and black as a national flag? Well that's just got to be about the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be!

got an oldie for you

i decided to tell you about an old time wrestler that i actually met as a kid, to this day i think it's kinda neat.
he was known as the masked marvel, he wrestled back in the 50's, and 60's. he wore a hood over his head, cause he didn't want anyone to know who he was. see in everyday life he was a chicago policeman! he worked with my dad, and they became partners, and friends.
funny thing is, he was almost a priest. left the seminary in his last year. amazing huh?
