Your favorite Stephen King story?

Yes, while I've noticed a fair amount of disagreement on the forum (I'm partially to blame- I know), I would imagine that most people would agree that that woman was not all that attractive 🙂 . There are a number of differences between the book and the movie, not the least of which is the character development (and background story) that you must be reading now. This would be indicative of all movies that are drawn from books, unless they chose to deal with a small portion of a book. The Shining TV movie that was made subsequently was a multiple part mini-series, afterall.

i find that difference with many books made into movies. and usually the book is far better..the only different books would be "A Passage to India" "Terms of Endearment" and "Howard's End" all were far better than the books..those i believe had great screenwriters and directors

and my brand new book containing "The Shining" has a big chunk out of one top of a page, thanks to my cat. grrrrr

The Tommyknockers......Hey, Izzy! Tommyknockers Tommyknockers, knocking at your door...... :devil2:

Definately either IT or Pet Cemetery

...and then ol' Stevie started writing about haunted lamps and such and he lost me.

I have read them all... and jeez... it's hard to choose.'
I like the books of short stories especially Skeleton Crew and Night shift, but for the novels...
Thinner
The Green Mile
Misery
Bag of Bones

The Shining
It. For some odd reason I only made it half way through the book.
Nightmares & Dreamscapes--great stories.
Cycles of the Werewolf. 'Silver Bullet' is based on that book.

good books are worth the read

I really enjoyed misery and IT ...those two stories were incredible , i could not put the book down

I hate you..... 😎

The Stand was excellent. There were times where I'd find myself reading it for hours at a time. Loved it so much, I bought the dvd of the mini-series they had on tv years ago.

Needful things was another one I could not stop reading. And The Shining I read when I was 14. To this day, that and The Exorcist are the only books that actually gave me nightmares.

Other favorites of his include Cujo, Thinner, The Long Walk, The Langoliers, The Dark Tower series and two of his earlier short story books: Night Shift and Skeleton Crew.

Oh yeah, Different Seasons was really good. For those who don't know, that book contained the stories that Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption came from.

o slacker, if "The Shining" gave a big tough gruff guy like you nightmares..what will it do to me??? lol

and please quit with the clown pictures..grrr i hate those things..

I'll be posting a review of every Stephen King story that I've read, which is most of them. Here are a couple high points:

Favorite: Insomnia. Not so much for the plot itself as the characters. I suffer from a mild form of insomnia and I sympathized and empathized with Ralph Roberts' plight, so much so that the book actually made me cry at one point. (I think where he's trying to make a bowl of soup and can't even get it together for that). I love the characters that can act intelligent, even though they don't quite realize the supernatural elements of what's going on (Leydecker, Joe Wyzer, Bill McCovern). I got annoyed with the Dark Tower crossover; he uses it as a Deus Ex Machina of sorts. Can't think of a plot? Throw in the Dark Tower!!

I'm fond of almost all of his short stories. My favorite, unfortunately, was the first one I read: Autopsy Room 4.

Also partial to Misery, The Shining, Needful Things, and Dolores Claiborn (more reviews in detail).

I find some books extremely overrated though: The Stand and It. Both books would've been a good deal better and more coherent if they were about 500 pages shorter. Though I did love the Apocalyptic Rock Fight in It, as well as the concept of the Deadlights.

I loathe the Dark Tower series. I find Roland to be entirely unsympathetic, and plot twists in the books are more likely to make me smack my forehead than actually be impressed. Stephen King showing up in book 6 was cool, I'll admit--but that's about all that I enjoyed.

More in-depth review coming later.

Like I said, I was 13 or 14 when I read it. The nightmares came right after I finished reading it. No dreams about it lately though.

well thanks to reading that description about the horrible apparition in the bathroom, guess what i dreamed about last night??? sighs grrr...but i will continue to read..it's a very well written book..

I had to resurrect this thread, just because I wanted to start my own and these are all good contributions already here...in my opinion, King has a gift with language that not too many English-language writers come close to...it's not only how fucking scary his images are, his writing really is poetry too. I love it, there are passages I read over and over again from his work.

"IT" was the first Stephen King I've ever read...and I still love to go back and reread it. Awesome. I think it should be shot into space, like Beethoven's 9th, to be preserved for the ages...

"Gerald's Game" messed me up...it's horror for people who are into BDSM. That's the first book I've ever read cover -to-cover when I first picked it up. Didn't have a choice, I had to keep reading...

And while it isn't usually compared to his other work, "Rose Madder" is one of the only books I've ever had a physical reaction to... In the first chapter, when she's having a miscarriage...the description is just too vivid for me, I actually felt faint the first time I read it. And I never finished it.

So yeah... Stephen King has my respect. 🙂

That book was creepy, but sometimes I felt like he rehashed stuff SOOO much that I found myself skipping whole sections. But the nastiest stuff was towards the end with the handcuffs. :xlime: The creepiest part was...surprise surprise...the dude himself.

I liked The Long Walk, though the ending blew.

I liked Misery. Blow out the special candle, you dirty birdies! And for here, I find the book to be way creepier than the movie, though that Bates woman knows how to make a good crazy person.

I REALLY loved The Dark Tower series. So much infact I'm collecting the comics for it right now. As well as the comics from the series...

The Stand. I remember it as a tv series, and I enjoyed it then too. The comic artwork is amaaaa-zing!

The Black House. Some of the imagery from that book I'm never going to be able to get out of my head until I'm old and senile.

For Stephen King books I've ONLY seen as movies or shows...

The Tommyknockers
Rose Red
The Shining
It
Carrie

The scariest of those were It and The Shining.

Books -

IT
The Dark Tower Series
The Stand
The Shining
Pet Sematary
The Green Mile

Short Stories -

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption - Also one of my desert island movies
Apt Pupil
The Man in the Black Suit
The Langoliers - An interesting movie was made starring Bronson Pinchot, better known as Balki Bartokomous from TV's Perfect Strangers
Children of the Corn
1408 - Also good movie with John Cusack

A special message to anyone who only saw the TV movie version of IT. That movie is a big pile of shit. The book is incredible. Buy now. Amazon ships stuff for free. However, the movie version of The Shining with Jack Nicholson is one of the best horror/thriller movies to date.
