There are a number of differences between the book and the movie, not the least of which is the character development (and background story) that you must be reading now. This would be indicative of all movies that are drawn from books, unless they chose to deal with a small portion of a book. The Shining TV movie that was made subsequently was a multiple part mini-series, afterall.
i find that difference with many books made into movies. and usually the book is far better..the only different books would be "A Passage to India" "Terms of Endearment" and "Howard's End" all were far better than the books..those i believe had great screenwriters and directors
and my brand new book containing "The Shining" has a big chunk out of one top of a page, thanks to my cat. grrrrr

The creepiest part was...surprise surprise...the dude himself.
