Just wondering if we had any other accomplished keglers. Finally threw an 800 series tonight. I've had a lot of 300 games, but this is my first 800 set. Man, that's a tough number to get to...lol. Went 268-289-244.

F'ing amazing. Congrats !

Was this in a league ?

My league scores used to go 180-142-104 as the number of inhaled beers climbed during the evening. Always wondered why I had trouble finding a team that would accept me.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Fuggin' Impressive! Big time!!

Wow, I thought I was a dork for getting a Varsity letter my senior year for being on the bowling team! I love to bowl, but no one ever wants to go with me because they think it's stupid. I think my highest game has been 185. Nothing too impressive, but I'll get there! Congrats on your 800!!!

League..

Yes it was a sanctioned league. I used to bowl on the regional Pro Bowlers Tour back in the 1970's, but it wasn't much money and when I got married the travel was prohibitive, so I went back to college and on to the corporate world and became a part timer in the alleys. Paid for a lot of college throwing money games after closing and in tournaments, but the last 15 years I've been strictly a 3 game a week bowler. Odd that I'd finally get the 800 after all this time and in such casual circumstances.

No alcohol for me at all during league, but that's by medical reasons more than choice...lol.

I average around 210-215 each year. Not outstanding by todays standards, but it's at a fairly difficult house. Last time the PBA tour swung through the guys hated the place because it leaves a lot of 10's even on solid hits..*shrug*..just the way it seems to always have been at this place.

Anyway, it was fun, but exhausting.....

Quite impressive, Q!

We have a different variation of bowling here: "Kegeln", with 9 pins and smaller skittle-balls. Bowling Centers only arrived in Germany during American occupation after WW2, but "Kegeln" is quite a popular sport for everybody. "Alle Neune" (all nine) is their salute among fans.

Well done...nice series!
I hope your team won!!!!
I have seen guys bowl 300's and thier team nearly loose the game!!!:sowrong:

I used to bowl quite a bit...I had a 190+ average...
the problem with my average is that I would have a 190 game a 250 game and then a 104 or something!!!
That is why I was never the anchor I was too incosistent!!
Oh well it was fun

Oh and TKpervert..you are the "other" reason I love to go bowling to watch the "beer" guys get totally wasted be the 3rd game and try to bowl!!

My 104 wasn't because of beer, just lack of arm strength...

I'm in a church league, and my team is in second place, with only two more weeks to go. Not bad for a team that was dead last last year.
I average a 145, but i've been leaving that in the dust lately with scores around 170-180.

i remember that old joke about switching your bowling and golf scores to arrive at acceptable results.

Used to run into this up in Toronto/Montreal/etc., and some of the guys could adjust and still bowl well while others couldn't make the transition. I enjoyed it as a change of pace, and thought it was actually a bit harder overall because it didn't rely on power as much as pure control/accuracy.

Btw, Tommy, we lost the first game by 45 and won the other 2.

Yeah Q, I bet you play on a team with LOW handicap and play against teams that have a HIGH handicap...sometimes you almost feel you are playing against and extra opponent!

Oh well...GREAT Series!!!

Actually...

We were outmanned badly. 2 of our team couldn't make it (Passover Dinner at relatives) and we were bowling the second place team (yeah, we're first). This is a mixed league but it allows a 3 man 1 woman configuration for some reason, and half the teams in the league have 3 guys. We're one of the 2/2 and one of our ladies is a beginner, so we were getting about 40 sticks, since their 3 guys average 200, 195 and 190, and their woman is about a 160. It's an 80% of 220 setup, so unless you're sandbagging you're at a disadvantage having lower average bowlers. After losing with a 268 and realizing that even 300 wouldn't have been enough I got even more focused (okay, kinda like pissed off but with a bit of control..lol). Basically I had to give credit to the strength of the other team for bringing out my best effort. Threw the front 10 the second game and then chucked a mediocre shot for the 11th strike that drifted high and left a 4 pin.

Anyway, not sure I can ever muster another series like that, so I'm taking the upgraded ring and enjoying putting 2nd place back a bit farther..😉

Q

This is a hobby I've gotten back into recently. I bought my own ball as a birthday present to myself, a Y2K limited edition 16 pounder. I wish I could claim that I've gotten a lot of 300 games, but the best score I've ever gotten was a 220 back in high school on a fluke where I wasn't even really trying (the last game of out of a bunch of low-scoring games.). On my birthday this year, I was hoping to break 200 again, but I came sooo close with a 4-bagger that ended up getting me a 198. It'll take time, but I'll get back up there.

Techinique

I took up bowling at about 6 years old because Dad was a teacher in the military, and at that time they made very little money, so we always rented as cheaply as possible, which inevitably was the houses by the bowling alley and train tracks (flattening pennies is another skill of mine..lol). I was always hanging out at the alley by default, and started helping out in order to get free games. I'm analytical by nature and watched and learned to throw a decent hook by age 8. All games are easier when learned early and practiced for significant amounts of time. Bowling is a series of adjustments predicated on recognizing changing lane conditions and having knowledge of your equipment and abilities. I can do nearly everything well except for consistently lofting the ball...never sure why but I just can't seem to get a handle on that adjustment. I compensate with numerous hand positions and knowledge of oil patterns...lol...but I'm always impressed with those who can perform that particular manuever well. Changing speeds is also a strength and helps open up a lot of lines...

Good luck to you Flatfoot, and feel free to PM me if I can help in any way.

Q

Congratlations, Qjakal! 😀

When I bowled a lot, I averaged about 160. When I had my best game ever, 224, I made the other three people that I was with sign the score sheet to testify that it really had happened. 😛

The "Pin"

Manager came out with a pin from the back and he listed the scores/date/league on it and then signed it for me...nice gesture. They'll also be putting up a canvas( i think) banner on the back wall with my name, the date, the lanes (19 and 20) and score..it's been a few years since there was one there, or so it appears from the current banners, whcih date from the 1980's forward.

Gave the pin to my 2 and a 1/2 year old...for about 2 minutes...lol.

😛 Q

Good series, damn good series!!

to get an 800 required pretty good consistency over three games, which you did.

Congratulations again!! 😀

Now that is a crime!!

My 104 wasn't because of beer, just lack of arm strength...

If I could throw out a game in a series of 3 it almost always would be the third game 100% of the time. The juice would be flowing!

Being as young as I am, I consider myself to be of good standing, bowling-wise...

A few weeks ago, I shot my first seven, a 701 series (beating my mother's 27-year high of 700). My average right now is only 177 or so. High game: 259.

I am a lefty and I throw a BIG hook. My 16 lb reactive urethane ball is the smaller hook of the two, reserved for low-hook houses, like synthetic lanes or heavy oil. I put it down 3 to 5 boards left of the center and it drifts out about 10 boards, waits for the last second, then rockets back into the pocket. My 15 lb reactive resin El Nino, however, is a MONSTER. I use it in heavy-hook houses, like wood or wood/synthetic mixes. I literally have to stand in the right hand gutter, put the ball on 3 board, and push it all the way to the lefty's one or two board. It always comes back, within the last 10 feet of the lane it grabs the wood and flies across into the pocket like someone kicked the hell out of it.

Trouble with such a big hook: Leaves alot of seven pins. Fuckers.

Corner pins...

You're likely either a bit high or low in the pocket Viper, despite appearances from the foul line. If you think you're running high in the pocket, move up about 2 inches on the approach, if low, back about 3 to give the ball a chance to hook that extra bit of time and settle into optimum position. The big hook is certainly not a bad thing, as it allows you maximum angle into the pocket and creates mix. Being lefty is nice because you don't need to adjust as much or as often, and aren't restricted to track shots when the lanes break down. I can throw about 170 lefty, and used to shoot all my 10 pins that way in tournaments and scratch leagues...much easier than flattening and firing it with my right hand. In general the light shot with mix should be your best best with that kind of reaction.

I stand 35-ish, drift about 5 boards right and swing it from 12 to the 5 board about halfway down to get the best reaction at this house. Have to keep your shoulder open, as you probably know, or this shot can fly on you and you'll get inconsistent results.

Threw the 800 with an old titanium ball I dragged out of the basement a few weeks ago, btw. I rarely buy new equipment and do most of my own drilling and setup...it pays to befriend the pro shop guys.😛

Switched over to 15 pound balls for the most part over the last few years since the house hooks up pretty hard and you need to keep the speed up for the entire night. That eliminates any 3rd game fatigue as well, and the difference in carry between a 15 and 16 pound ball is negligible.

Nice job on the 700, btw.

Viper...You power lefties always amaze me!!!
You get such POWER out of that shot..yeah it sucks when you miss but when you get it you GET IT!!!:wow: 😱

Anyway, Congrats on the 701!

Oh and follow Q's advise about moving to fix those seven pins!

OH and Q, I like your idea of the 15 pounder...I found though that the 15er's "bounced" off a bit too much...now 15.5 might be good.

I'm also a lefty, but I'm not really a hook bowler. Even though it looks awesome, hooking seems too unpredictable to me. My ball's set for about a 5-7 board hook. I usually stand with my left foot on the center dot (or a little left of that if my ball keeps veering to the right on that particular day.) and I try to aim between the third and forth dots on the left side. I think I usually wind up with the 5 pin being left over.

Q...I would move, but it boils down to my own arm's consitency. If I move at all, it runs the ball way left or way right...
