Breaking news!! Fire-and a dead body-@ Passivearts

I just read online that his dog was also found dead. John had a beautiful dog and a beautiful relationship with his hound. This is all so very sad.

The first time I entered Passive Arts, I met John and his dog. He told me that the dog was a wolf - I'll always remember that. His dog was a very beautiful, gentle animal that befriended everyone and was always there with him. In fact, when I first heard of this today, my very first thought was of the dog he loved so dearly and whether I should try to adopt it. Of course, we now know that his beloved dog who lived with him also died with him. I hope they are well together wherever they may have gone.

This whole thing seems surreal. I mean, Passive Arts was THE place for our Southern California gatherings and John always made us feel welcomed. Even when he partied with all the other "fetishes", he would always stop by and make us feel very welcome. This is an unbelievable loss in our society as a whole. He was a good man.

I know everyone who knew him will miss him. Wow.. Just wow....

This is all true. Although I attended such gatherings at Passive Arts only once a year on my annual visits to L.A. each summer, John remembered me and always made me feel welcome in Passive Arts. His passing is a great loss.

That wolf passing was damned near as sad as the man. Mighty powerful and beautiful animal, and amazingly peaceful.

Please spread the word that Johns family wishes everyone to take a step back
by RonnieRock about 7 hours ago

Please spread the word that Johns family wishes everyone to take a step back and allow them to grieve and to take care of what has to be delta with. Their father passed less then 48 hours ago please give them the time to deal with their grief with out being overwhelmed by calls and unrelated and unnecessary garbage. ThoughThey appreciate that he has so many people that love and care about him BUT Please Please do not advertise fund raisers vigils or services or anything else to do with his passing. The family will let you all know if and when a service for him will be held.

Please know John would not want to have any services for him at another dungeon. He would want it to be at passive arts where he created a magical and open safe place for like minded adults to find and explore their inner desires and find them selves. The place he gave us all to call home. Please pray and send love and caring energy to his loved ones and those most closely effected by his passing, but please give them what they need and what they most need is time.

Thank you.

How terribly sad. Shocking. Been there only once....two visits on a weekend several years ago. Had no idea I would see Milagros there on his annual L.A. visit. Saturday evening party. Made to feel comfortable and welcome by everybody. Must have met John but am not sure. In any event, the atmosphere was comfortable and fun. No one deserves such a fate. How out-of-control must the perpetrator have been? High on booze or drugs? (or both?) If so, not a surprise that he was fired. PA didn't have that kind of atmosphere. My thoughts go to John and his family. And how cruel to murder his dog as well. Looks like this was premeditated. Should get life in prison at a minimum.

Thanks, Ann. It's good to see what his family wants to do (rather not do) for the time being.

Here's the latest article.

He is facing arson, murder, and animal cruelty for killing Coda (John's dog) with a chance for life in prison.

Thanks, Angel. That has more details than I had seen before.

Yes, I remember being surprised to see you there that night. It was a fine party. 😀

OMG!!! He shot him several times in the head? What the... What a bastard for doing that to him. I'll never understand how anyone can be so cruel. I hope they give him life in prison and don't find out he's like insane or something.

You're welcome.

As terrible as it is, I'm glad he was gone before the fire reached him. I hope the same is true for Koda. So sad!

I somewhat agree....though maybe if he were still alive he would have been able to save himself and his wolf...I hope the animal didn't suffer....it's so horrible to imagine his panic as the fire grew around him. I know John would have saved his dog at the very least from what I have heard.

I know, it's horrific. 🙁

An ex-employee shot the owner and set the place on fire. People are really loosing it out there.

I wonder if that's the older guy I have seen at Passive Arts who kind of looked after the cleaning and repairs.

The man arrested for the murder and arson was named David E. Albert. He is in his 50's, had been employed there as a maintenance worker, and was known to customers and staff as "Big Dave". He's in jail not able to meet the bail which was set above $2 million.

An update from someone close to the case: D.E.A. was charged today, expected to be arraigned tomorrow...apparently people are removing their claims (I'm guessing that means bondage equipment) from PA tomorrow...I don't know what that means for PAS but it's sad.. 🙁

They'd likely have to clear out whatever didn't belong to John so the insurance assessor can determine damages, etc. I'd also imagine they'd want the items secure while any cleanup, reconstruction (if any) is done. I'm not sure if John still had a partner or anyone else with a stake in the club. But, if so, it would likely go to figuring out who has rights to what. Pretty cold to think about this soon. But, the reality of what they're facing sucks! They'll have lots of crap to take care of. I just hope they take care of themselves in the process.

Ann, thanks for clearing that up. Much appreciated. But yes, pretty surprising they will be handling it so soon....

Sorry I just learned what has happened to John tonight. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends. So senseless and tragic.....so sad 🙁

dozens of people are out of jobs, too...

I hope we can figure out a way to help in some manner. A fund for the employees who have done so much for this community, something...

I know John's family has asked people to wait for awhile and respect their privacy, but down the road we have to think about all those others who lost their jobs.

I drove by after work last night.. my job is just a few blocks from there... Some large sheets of plywood covering the entrance where the fire must have been, but everything else looked intact..

I feel so badly for John and his family.. My thoughts and prayers are with them.. I hope people will respect their wishes and allow them time to mourn...

I really hope Passive Arts does not shut down - it would be a great legacy to John to keep it open - if the family and/or any partners don't want to do that, perhaps we all could organize a co-op to keep it open. The facility, especially with its expansion, is fabulous and it would be a great loss to lose it.

I respectfully have to disagree honey. I can't imagine EVER being able to go back in there, not after this. It'd be like the Beatles trying to replace John Lennon~you can't do that. There is only one. Although my beloved TMF friends made the events and of course the Goddess who so carefully handpicked the venue for us, it was John for me who made the club. HE chose the girls, HE kept the place SO clean and stocked to the roof with anything we needed. He made what could have been a seedy experience for a pretty vanilla kid like me a lot of fun and the kind of extra effort he went to for us was just...above and beyond. And yes, part of me knows it was a business decision, and it was a good one. Keep them happy and they'll tell all their friends and keep the money rolling in, blah, blah, blah, I get it.

But the kind of caring and appreciation he showed us, I don't think is typical. He'd give us special discounted rates and did I mention he'd have throw us these amazing all-you can-eat barbecues where HE did the cooking, himself??? He didn't call some caterer. And it wasn't just ANY cooking~anyone remember his signature mac/cheese crusted potatoes? OMG.

And on the subject of Koda suffering in the blaze, I hope I can ease some caring minds~one of my best friends since high schools Dad was a Boston area Battalion Chief for almost 30 years. He taught me something interesting. My number one most feared way to die on the planet is by fire. Do you know what kills most fire victims first? Surprise! It's NOT the fire, it's the smoke inhalation. You choke, which is terrible, yes, but unless the scenario is something like being burned at the stake where you're literally set ON FIRE, the agony usually lasts at most a few minutes, you just can't breathe anymore. By the time you think you'd actually be feeling the fire, smelling your burning flesh, you're already gone. Sorry to put it in such macabre terms but some of you out there know how I am. Just the facts ma'am. In all probability, Koda's passing was a speedy one.

Hey West Coast Gath gang~did any of us actually MEET this maggot? I've not seen a pic. It doesn't matter, really, I was just wondering.
XOXO

Hi my goddess,

By "maggot" I believe you are referring to the person who is accused of committing the crime. if that is so, then I believe I have met the maggot. More than once. I won't swear to it as I have not seen a photo of the maggot, but all descriptions fit this person. And it I am correct, then it adds to the sadness because he has been with the club for many many years and I was under the impression he was part of the family. Again, I can't swear to anything.

And goddess, thank you for all the lovely reminders of what great times we had and how he took such good care of us. He was so much fun and had such a delightful personality.

Also, I hate to be the grinch and the malcontent here, but as sweet and generous as you ideas are tkl-pen, I will not be participating. I do have charities that I support and I have people close to me who are also having employment challenges and I try to be there for them as much as possible. If there is any consolation, most of the ladies that I met had other means of income and as with beauty salons and real estate offices, there was a revolving door and I am sure those who want to stay in the business will find work either in another dungeon or free-lance. As far as doing a co-op in keeping the place in business, that is great if some of you can do it. I don't have a desire and business experience to enter this culture professionally.

To everyone else, I look forward to participating in RobAce's radio show this Saturday.

I won't be able to call in to RobAce's radio show memorial to John tomorrow since I will be up in New Hampshire (for the S.N.O.B. munch and play party). I have sent him a PM with my memories of John and of Passive Arts. Rob says he will read it on the air. I will post it here also for those of you who don't listen to the radio show.

Memories of John and of Passive Arts

There was a TMF gathering at Passive Arts Studios on Saturday, June 17, 2006. It was in honor of TicklingFeet4Fun and Sadira, visiting L.A. from Michigan. It coincided with my annual trip to L.A. to see some Dodger games so I was able to attend.

That was the first time I had ever been to Passive Arts and the first time I ever met John, the owner. The gathering was incredible. The play portion was scheduled from 2pm to 4pm. At 2pm promptly, Mistress Feral introduced herself to us in the Elizabethan Room and asked for a male volunteer to strip down to his shorts and be strapped down onto The Immobilizer. I was quick to volunteer, and others followed after Feral was done with me.

Also present during the two hours were three other women, all working as Switches at Passive Arts. I can recall Switch Courtney, a tall blonde woman, stripping down to her G-string, lying down on a bondage table, and inviting us to tie her down and tickle her, only specifying that she have a safe word in case she couldn't breathe. There was no lack of volunteers for that, either, and I spent a good deal of time working on her lovely feet.

John came over to the TMF people during these happy proceedings and introduced himself as the owner of the club. He invited us all to have a meal when the play time was ended at 4pm. He made us all feel welcome and offered to get us anything that we needed. He was genuinely happy to see us having a good time.

At 4pm, there was a buffet of hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, and other summer barbecue items. There was no charge for the meal and no admission charge for the gathering. They did pass around a tip jar for the women who worked there who had attended the gathering and I donated to that generously. John contributed his facilities and his food to us as a service to the BDSM community, to the tickling community in particular as a part of it. That's the kind of person he was. None of us were under any obligation to give him any business, although I myself booked a two hour session with Courtney before I returned to New York.

I went to three more TMF gatherings there since then, usually on a Saturday evening rather than in the afternoon as the 2006 one had been. I remember speaking with John in 2007 and 2008 briefly, but not last year, he was busy that Saturday.

This year, I came to Passive Arts on Friday, June 4, for a two hour session with Submissive Marie. (By the way, I posted a review of that session on the TMF.) I arrived about 10 minutes before they opened, at 11:50a.m., as my session was scheduled for 12 noon to 2pm. As I was buzzed in and entered, I saw John sitting in his office, to the right as you enter, doing paperwork at his desk. His dog was sitting on the floor at his feet. I waved to him, not really expecting him to remember who I was. It had been two years since I spoke to him briefly. Here is the conversation that followed after I waved:

"You're milagros317, aren't you?" he asked.

"Yes," I replied. "I'm here today for a session with Marie."

"Good choice," he said. "You'll enjoy yourself. She's really ticklish and she's a laugher."

He smiled and went back to his paperwork.

That was the last time I saw him. It turns out that will be the last time I will ever see John or his dog, they were both murdered earlier this week, on July 27.

I will always remember him the way he was when he spoke to me about Marie, a man who was doing a job he loved and who wanted his clients to have a good time, to have fun.

Rest In Peace, John. You will be missed.
