note to mods - I originally posted this in another thread, but moved it here since the rant wanted it's own space. Please feel free to delete my original, inappropriately under "good news for Trek fans" in Celebs.

Ok, fans, sorry, but...
I just HAVE to put in my two cents about Star Trek, having been a big TNG fan.

Ahem,

Voyager is the whiniest, most simpering bunch of politically correct crap I've ever seen. Makes my teeth ache just thinking about it. The "captain" needs a good smack!

DS9 had its moments, but the "commander" is an AWFUL actor. I've seen him in several other things, and he stunk in all of them also. Shallow acting in one of the leads does NOT a good series make. Speaking of which...

I absolutely, positively HATE the new "enterprise" series. Gaaaak! Whole utterly plotless and pointless series makes my teeth ache something fierce. But aside from the insipid, shallow plotlines and mediocre (at best) acting, is the captain! Ok, I have nothing against this guy personally, as a matter of fact, I REALLY liked Quantum Leap. But the man is just NOT believable as a commanding officer. He seems to do nothing but stand around, making inane comments and constantly SMIRKING! The man looks like he's perpetualy poised on the edge of telling a joke! Come now. Can you say "command presence?".

Now, Patrick Stewart had "command presence". He was entirely believable in the role. For gods sake, somebody shoot these people and bring back the old series, before my teeth fall OUT!

GAAAAAAK!

Humph!

You may now return to your regularly scheduled thread.

Well...ALL of the Trek shows have had their good and bad moments....
TNG not excluded..I hated the first season as the acting was poor at best and the characters just didnt fit together..and let's not forget the "Wesley Crusher saves the day again" season...eewww, how lame can you get!

Bottom line...give the new "Enterprise" some time and who knows......

Agreed...

Let them have a season to develop..although they're pulling out some real cliches already. Do ANY Vulcans actually practice the emotionless logic they espouse...sheesh... Q

In that timeline the Vulcans were still not totally motivated by "pure logic"...even in Spock's ttime they were still struggling a little with the emotion factor.

I don't know much about Star Trek but...

I DO know that Patrick Stewart beats William Shatner any day of the week! 😀 ENGAGE! Not...talking...like...this! 😛

Chazwazza!!

As long as Enterprise and Voyager do not start making movies, I think I can tolerate their lackluster shows.

Must...see...Red...Dragon.

I'm a huge TNG fan myself, and to this day I have to say that Patrick Stewart has portrayed the best Commanding Officer, so far. It seemed like William Shatner, in the role of Kirk, was all about blowing stuff up. He seemed to be the "shoot first, ask questions later" type. Picard always acted more political, which I can actually believe a Commanding Officer would act like in a futuristic society. I'm not even going to comment on Janeway or Sisko. I haven't had a chance to watch Enterprise, yet, but I don't really have much of a desire to, since I've always been biased toward TNG, which I get plenty of on TNN.

I have to agree with you on the first season. The characters didn't seem to mesh well together, and some of the acting could be construed as cheesy. Perhaps the idea of a newly commissioned ship with a new crew could explain that. I can't think of how many times Data made superfluous comments in the first season that were not plot essential, which just garnered stares from the other crew members. Perhaps an android would act this way with a new crew, however. Also, though Counselor Troi looked good wearing the "Starfleet-issue" miniskirt ( 😕 ), I couldn't take her seriously as an officer while all prissed up in a miniskirt and too much makeup, even if her job is to be the "approachable" officer. Also, early on, she seemed like someone more overtaken by emotion than someone who reads emotion.

My only other gripe about TNG: why were there no enlisted personnel that had a major role in the show? Something I'll never be able to swallow is a ship where the officers do everything, and the enlisted man's only role is to get court-martialed or shot by a Romulan.

In my opinion Sisko was the man and best commanding officer around. 😎

Actually.....part....of....the....fun....of....Capt....Kirk....is...that...he....talks....like....this. Now......"BRING ME THE BRANDY!!!!!"

I agree with you ShiningIce. Sisko was the man. Who else could have punched out Q and not been turned into a pile so semi-sencient goo?

While the first season on TNG was pretty bad, it was still better than the second season with that annoying @#$% Polasky. I couldn't stand her. Everytime she and Data shared a scene, all she did was insult him.

And don't get me started on Wesley!

Now, back to the original point. Enterprise isn't the best Trek series I've seen, but it's still Star Trek.

BTW: What does everyone think of the new movie coming out?

*To Enterprises' rescue comes an Admiral in shining armour.....*

Ok people, listen up. After watching most of the TOS, owning the majority of TNG vids that were released, following DS9 with an almost fanatic zeal AND appreciating the excellent story concept that was Voyager, I will here and now freely admit that Enterprise is the best of the bunch. Heres why:

It relies on characters to save the day and not technology. To me, allowing the good guys to win because they've got this extraordinary gizmo that does (conveniantly) what needs to be done to sort things out is an example of lame story-writing. This was most prominent in Voyager: May I direct your attention to the introduction of trans-phasic torpedos and ablative armour in Endgame. "Whats that, Paris? Another borg cube? Blow it away, it's annoying me....."

Enterprise, being set in a pre-TOS era, has no access to all this technology, and so it's pretty much down to the crews inginuety and wit to keep themsleves alive. To the person who said that it was plotless, please remember that this is the first series of what is billed to be at least a three series show, and so alot of the current episodes we're seeing are purely focused on establishing the characters and setting the scene. If the producers stick to the ST timeline, the Federation should go to war with the Romulans towards the end of series two, and then we'll see some more DS9-like plots devoloping 🙂

As for the accusation of poor acting, especially in the case of Captain Archer, well, you're just plain wrong. There is no charecter in Enterprise that is 2D, all of them are well-rounded and well acted: top marks to T'pol, Dr Flox (sp) and, of course, Trip, who are alot more real than say, err, Worf? lol...

Captain Arcer....yeah, he's no command presence, is he? And thats the beauty of it, because it makes the tension between him and T'pol (who would make a far better captain, lets be fair) that much more real. /archer just isn't quite right for the job, we know this, and T'pol just keeps on hinting at it, and so you get this wonderful tension.
lol, oh no, I'm getting too deep here...I shall back out now, and hope that I've made my point....

I liked Quantum Leap too, but never because of Scott Bakula's acting talent. (Or lack of it.) The guy only has one tone to his voice and the way he slurs his esses gives me the shits.

Ah that's better. 😀

I liked the original series and "The Next Generation", everything else basically stinks big time. Voyager reeks of politcal correctness like Biscuit said and Enterprise is just boring to me.

Favorite line: Damn it Jim I'm a doctor not a bricklayer.

"He's dead, Jim." -- McCoy, The Enemy Within,

"He's dead, Jim." -- McCoy, The Devil in the Dark,

"You're dead, Jim." -- McCoy, Amok Time,

"He was worse than dead." -- McCoy, Spock's Brain,

"You're dead, Jim." -- McCoy,

I remember being the only girl in grade school who pretended to be in outer space thanks to the original Star Trek series.

*I* was the captain of the enterprise. Sheesh...*I* was Kirk!!!!! I even remember talking_really_slowly in Jim fashion much to the annoyance of my older brothers when they would have their friends around to play a game of Star Fleet Battles.Yes, I thought they were the same thing back then. (The old one ..with the string!) I thought I was the coolest thing in knee high boots, mini skirt, and really pointy black eyeliner that made me look "just like" every female on the ship! *sigh* I used my Barbi Doll couch as a phaser and a calculator makes a LOVELY device for finding life forms on strange planets. *sigh* This explains so much about me. 😛 But, time marches on and something lovely happened.

TNG

As a female fresh into her sexuality, I can say that Mr Stewart made a lasting impression on me. He was, and will forever be...the best leader that ever led any group of followers in any ST series.

Why?

Well, sheesh...just look at that sexy bald head! Oh MY! (Is it warm in here?) Yes, I know...how DARE I base such important matters as the best Star Fleet Commander on such drivel? I just can't help myself. *shiver* Sexy and that accent. Yummy!

I think the worst thing about TNG was when they made the switch to the uniforms that required the "tug." I mean, c'mon...what WERE they thinking? They can build a starship, but they can't get a shirt that doesn't ride up? That annoyed the ever living hell outta me! That and the one epoisode where the crystals are alive..."Big ugly bags of mostly water!" PU-LEEZE!

I watched Voyager...it was ok. I've yet to get past the firs few minutes of the new series. I dig Sam...lol..but put him back with Al and the silly time machine please!

Is this the thread where I can say that I actually own a trillion Star Trek books and not look like a total geeky girl? 😛
