Yeah, seriously, I'm pretty damn lucky. What happened was I helping my grandma move stuff at her new place this evening, and it was started to kinda rain a bit, pretty windy but it didn't really thunder or anything. I remember I was getting ready to go inside because it was about to come down, so I was heading out to get just a few more things really quick when suddenly I heard a loud boom as I saw a flash of lightning strike right beside me, part of it getting my left arm I think since I definitely got shocked. before going unconscious. I woke up a bit later in a bed in my folk's home and was told I'd been out for about 5 hours. I seem to be ok now, thankfully I guess it didn't get me that bad since I'm not scarred really, although that arm was burned a bit and was a bit numb.

But yeah, I'm really glad it didn't hit my directly, otherwise I doubt I'd be here now. Has anyone else been struck by lightning before? How'd you come out of it if you did?

WOW!
Not a good wow either.

I am glad your okay. You really should get checked out by a doctor though. Just in case. If you were knocked out for several hours it would be a good thing.
Things happen to your body you may not be aware of.

I am glad you are okay though.

Stay safe, and please get checked out.

Rob

That's a "too close for comfort" call there bro! The girls would have had to send you memorial rapesecks :blaugh: I'm with Rob, go get it checked out. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if you were sore as a mofo tomorrow.

Closest I ever seen was a lightning strike hit the opposite endzone of a football field the team was practicing on. The coach, who was overweight and a huge hardass, literally ran faster than every player to the locker room. The event itself was very scary as we ran inside, but the story about coach became the funniest thing for the next 4 years every time we talked about it.

Bloody hell, you are lucky and that was pretty damn close, couldn't have got closer by what you said.

Hope your Gran is ok and it didn't upset her too much.

I love thunderstorms but I wouldn't wanna be that close to one 😉

I know where you’re coming from Excess, I had a frightening experience myself a long time ago, and it’s stuck in my head as if it happened yesterday.

When I was a kid, I used to caddy at a country club which also happened to be rather high above sea level. The eleventh green was the highest point of the course, and one summer afternoon the golf party I was with just happened to be on the approach to that green when a very menacing looking cloud came over us.

Everyone in the party started having reservations about continuing, particularly me and the other caddy since we were each carrying two bags of lightning rods. But it didn’t matter, within seconds, one of the loudest cracks that I’ve ever heard to this day combined with a flash of light that left temporary shadows in my vision came down.

The bags were dropped and everyone jumped into the sand traps. No one was hit, but the sickening smell of ozone permeated the air. We couldn’t have been more than a few yards from the strike.

Needless to say everyone was pretty shook up, but we did finish the round after the storm passed, with all the golfers jabbing at each other on how the incident was affecting their game.

Now that I think back though, I don't remember the tip being all that spectacular either. :shake:

Wow! Lucky escape.

I believe Roy C. Sullivan holds the record (struck 7 times).

He missed?! All that fucking praying and sacrificing and church-building I did, and he fucking MISSED?! The God of Israel is a waste of time.

That's what you get for having bad taste in cosplay girls mister poo-cactus. Seriously.

I've never been hit directly but my bike did once with me on it. Was cruising down the highway in the hills here and it hit the right side mirror and came out the left foot peg. The bike stuttered for a second and picked right back up and kept going when the breakers reset. Good thing about it was that mirror was a little loose from stripped threads, the lightening welded it up nice and tight. heh Had a nice scorch mark on it though, made for a good conversation piece. No damage to me other than being a little tingly for a while but that could have been from me hyperventilating after it happened, scared the shit out of me seeing that at 60MPH.

Dude! Damn! What Rob says is good advice....you really need to get checked because there can be a delayed reaction in the nervous system...

Nearly getting hit by lightning is God's way of saying you need to stop hiding under trees in a thunderstorm.

I once stuck my fingers into a plug socket to see what would happen. I received a nice big shock, which then gave me super powers. Annoyingly, I lost them in a heated game of Australian Rummy.

Thanks all, really means alot to me. 😀

Storm: HELL YEAH! It'll take more than a surge of electricity to take down one of the Tag Team Champs. I know this from more than one occasion.

Headsnap: HA! Sorry, you can't get rid of me that easily.

Rob, Krazie, Ven: I did actually earlier today. And I'm ok! As I thought, the burn on my left arm should heal, and other than that there's no damage. Funny, living relatively uninjured seems to be the one thing I'm good at. Not a bad thing I guess. 😛

Geez, man. Did you have a huge doorknob-sized metal stud in your mouth?

Like in Mythbusters... o.o

In any case, glad you're alive to tell the tale. Definitely one for the grandkids, down the road. 😀

No kidding, although I have a number of tales. Still, experience helps you grow, and apparently I've still got a bit to go. :happyfloa

Not been struck by lightning, but a friend of mine recently passed around 25 000 Volts through his body, when doing research for his PhD. He forgot to discharge the rather large metal capacitors before trying to fix them. Idiot. :cool2:

Glad to hear you survived! You need to be aware that most lightning-strike side effects develop days to weeks after the incident, and are most commonly neurological or neuro-psychiatric in nature.

A good list of side effects to watch out for can be found in this article:

http://science.nasa.gov/newhome/headlines/essd18jun99_1.htm

The article comments that:"70 percent of lightning survivors experience residual effects, most commonly affecting the brain (neuropsychiatric, vision and hearing). These effects can develop slowly, only becoming apparent much later."

I have two friends who survived strikes. Both were knocked out, as you were. One had no immediate effects, but by a year later, he no longer remembered anything in the month following the strike. The other had slurred speech that started about two weeks later; he was able to overcome it within a year with speech therapy.

Good luck! You're in our thoughts!

glad your ok.. but am suprised your parents did not call 911 .. man you should of been sent to the hospital..they could of helped you from having any residual effects.. lets pray you dont have any lasting side effects.. for that is a very strong possibility.. sorry dude.. I am in the medical field..
Dude,, you still need to go to the doc.. to have a check up and and ekg to have your heart checked out for it could of affected it and you may not have any symptoms yet and an eeg on your brain for those cells dont reproduce.. once damaged.. they are gone.

Thing is though you're in denial about your blindness, so all I really have to do is wait for you to walk out in front of a truck or something. <3

J/K manz you know I luf you. I NEED SCISSORS! 61!

EBunbury: Well I was of course told that I should keep the guy's number in case anything came up, but he said everything was ok. So only time will tell I guess.

Dimples: Yeah, but my folks are...odd. I think part of it is my mother wanting to take care of me herself if she can, over having someone else take care of me.

Headsnap: Well y'know, it is odd, and maybe I am blind. See, something happened to me yesterday when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go - I looked up and saw a glowing orange object in the sky, to the east! It was moving very irregularly... suddenly there was intense light all around me - and when I came to, I was home. What do you think happened to me?

(And I know man 😛 )

You got struck by lightening? That would be cool if the residual effects included cool super powers.

No... But I'm always afraid it's going to happen, and your story doesn't help my fear any, lol. Scary shit... Good thing you're still kickin', though.

Holy crap. Go see the doctor, please? I don't have any experience personally but my friend's brother was hit on the golf course in the the rain one day (jackass.) His sneakers had melted onto his feet and he was found in the fetal position next to a tree. He was pretty much a mental case after that. Never really recovered.
XOXO
