Hi gang. I just wanted to post a thread quick to let you all know I won't be around for a while...likely about a month or so. I figured I'd tell you all this way and save my fellow moderators from having to explain to anyone who happens to notice my absence (not that anyone would have, but it's a precautionary to save them the effort 🙂 ).

We had a house fire Wednesday morning that left us homeless. It was an electrical fire caused by our negligent landlords refusal to bring our electrical system up to code. He knew about the problem, and was warned it would likely cause a fire, but he did nothing about it, and sure enough, the house had a fire.

Fortunately, when the fire started, we lost power. I'm one of those people who HAS to sleep with a fan (even in the middle of winter) for white noise. So the minute we lost power, I was awake. We went downstairs to see what was up, and Lazarus saw the smoke billowing out of the side of the house. I called 911 while he rousted the kids from their sleep and got them out of the house, and I got my disabled parents out of the house (just in time too...the fire was burning a mere foot under our oldest sons head, where he was sleeping). The fire department was here within 4 minutes and got it under control before too much damage was done to our personal property (thank god). We did lose our couch, some clothes, books, and toys, but all total the loss was only estimated at about $5000. The house needs major repairs before it can be inhabited again, though.

We're just grateful that all 8 people in the house got out safely, and the fire department got the fire under control before our cats were in danger. Property can be replaced, family and pets can't.

Anyway, within 72 hours I managed to find Lazarus and I a new place to live, and I found my parents a new place to live. Both of them are leagues above where we were currently residing, so perhaps it happened for the best. No more asshole slum lord who verbally abuses us and neglects the property and lets himself in all the time without even knocking first.

The red cross was wonderful and put us up in a hotel for a few days until we could find new places to live, and they helped us with paying our first months rent and security deposits on our new homes. Unfortunately, though, every penny we have will have to be used for our moving expenses, so I won't be able to afford to get our internet or phone service hooked up until the first or second week of July, hence mine and Lazarus' month long hiatus from here. We'll also be busy moving for the next week or two.

Anyway, I'll miss you guys in the meantime. Please take care of yourselves, and try not to tear the place down while I'm gone. 😀

I'll post again when we get back online. Bye gang!

Mimi 🙂

You're in my prayers Mimi and Lazarus, along with your loved ones.

Terror in the night. The phrase has rung true for you and I hope you soon find some peaceful nights ahead. You have a good attitude about it Mimi, in that you are seeing it as a sign of better things to come!! I'm proud of you for that simply because it's a very difficult thing for many people!

No words can help here, but please know the sigh of relief at knowing you came through the ordeal as well as you did. Someone was watching over your children and parents~! Imagine that silence saved you! We should all be so observant!

On the other side of things...Something tells me that your landlord neesd to belly up to some, if not all, of your damages and expenses! I know there are legal obligations for such in some states. I'm sure you're checking into that already!

Good luck, and please drop a note when you can.

((I wrote this thinking that you maypop into the local library or e-cafe during your downtime and take a peep!! Hope you do as I'm sure others will repsond here as well!))

Mimi;

I wish you well with your move. Please PM me if you guys need anything else. I don't have much, but I can share!😎

Dear Mimis,

Iam so sorry to hear about your ordeal. You, Lazzy and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank God no one was hurt. Best wishes to you on reorganizing, and finding a new place to live. Take good care, and I hope to see you back on again as soon as you can.

Warm wishes,
Mitch

Leave of absence

Sorry to hear about that Mimi, but at lease nobody was hurt or injured, property can be replaced but life or limb cannot. Take care and hope to see you online again soon.

Mimi,

Thank god you and your beautiful family are safe, the pets included, like you said that is the most important thing in the world. I wish you all the best and hope you can look forward only to the future once you are in your new place. Best wishes to all!

Judy

We'll miss you, Mimi...

but kwil and I are sooooo happy that you and you're family are safe!

I've had landlords like that; dealing with a bit of one now, though not to the same degree.

When you return, e-mail me at [email protected].
(I'm not sure of your timeframe, but of course feel free to e-mail me anytime.)

While I'm not sure how we could help, we'd be willing to do whatever we could, even if that's just talking. 🙂

Love to you and your family!

Sorry to hear about that Meemster🙁 The good thing is everyone is safe, you have a new place. That is all that matters. Wishing you the best for you and yours, and all of you are in our prayers

Oh NO Mimi!

That is AWFUL! Give a yell if we can help in any way (Ray knows how to reach me.) Thank God your family and pets are safe.

I think it was JoB who very intelligently stated that your dick of a landlord is MAJORLY and legally responsible for your disaster. There is something called the fair housing act that when you get a chance after things settle a bit, I'd start researching. He can NOT enter your place without your ok, BTW. I see so many things wrong here that are making my head spin. (Although the attorneys I work for do not specialize in housing issues, I can probably get you a buttload of info.) Please take care of yourselves and find a reputable attorney ASAP. You'll both be missed.

XOXO

Very sorry to hear that Mimi 🙁 Just glad you and your family are safe, that's pretty scary stuff. I hope everything works out okay, you know you have friends here who will be thinkin of ya! 🙂

Im sorry to hear that. I have complained about ghetto land lords many times. (not on here though) They pass all these laws, but they think they are above them or something. I bet he gets off scott free.:sowrong: I hope that you get a good lawyer and get him for damages and such, and make him fix up his places for everyone else still living there. I am glad to hear that you got a new place thats even better and that nobody was hurt.

whoops...blonde moment!

I think I goofed Mimi, it's not a WHAT you need to contact, it's a WHO. It is the Fair Housing and Employment Dept for your state--it'll be a 1-800 number. They're responsible for making sure nice people don't get taken advantage of by shmuck landlords. I only had to deal with them once, a long time ago and they take these things VERY seriously. The guy I was renting from at the time tried to make ME pay for the pest control service I demanded he provide (I found a black widow.) And they were very helpful. (No, I didn't have to pay.)Hopefully someone can get this info to you, even if you're not able to read it...

XOXO

im sorry to hear that Mimi, but the great thing is your family and pets are ok...I hope to see you back on the forum soon..if you need anything you can always give me a [email protected]

Thank goodness everyone is OK! You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. PM me if there's any way this fellow Wisconsinite can help you.

I'm so sorry to hear about the fire mimi, but i'm glad everybody is ok. You might want to seek legal action against the Landlord. Anyway, i hope things work out for the best.

Mimi,

I'm glad you and your loved ones made it out safely. The Red Cross does wonders in times of disaster. I hope you were able to find a pet friendly shelter to house your cats while you're in the interim housing. I know it's sometimes difficult to find a place for pets. Best of luck with all your new move and such and do take care.

Glad you and your family are ok Mimi. You will always be in my prayers hun. Take care and hurry back. 😀 :redheart:

Here's to landing on your feet!!

All the best,

Thank God you and your family got out of the fire unharmed. 😀
Good luck in dealing with that &&^% landlord, and we'll miss you here. 😀

Hope It Turns Out Ok..

But it's almost impossible to prove an electrical fire was the fault of the landlord. Especially if your stuff was destroyed. He can always claim one of your appliances or something you had plugged in suffered a hot short.

Get back soon, Meems. It's just not the same here without you. All of my regards and the best of luck...

Re: Hope It Turns Out Ok..

Tron~
I must respectfully disagree. Having dated a couple of firefighters in my time, the forensic aspect has always fascinated me, and the cause of the fire is relativly easy to find. There are investigators trained to do just this. That, and coupled with the fact that this idiot PREDICTED it practically, in front of witnesses makes for some very damning evidence. (Did I mention pre-law was one of my majors?😀 ) Hell, I'd take the case in a heartbeat if I was licensed to practice in Wisconsin...

XOXO
