What the HELL?!?

Ok, maybe it's just because I'm a musician, but does anyone have any idea how RARE talent like this is? And not just talent, but the fucking DRIVE to do it.

In this age where kids are utterly wasting their time with learning how to press the right buttons on Guitar Hero, here's one who can actually play a REAL instrument. That takes brains, determination, practice, drive and a love of music that isn't bastardized by a shiny plastic guitar you can put kewl stickers on.

What kills me is that this kid could actually drink in Wisconsin clubs, but can't play. How fucked up is this country? And who's damn business is it to tell a couple of parents how to raise their kid? I would love five minutes alone in a room with whomever sent that death threat. It's an 8 YEAR OLD KID and you're making death threats?!? What's the matter, is some kid playing guitar somehow offensive to your morals or something? Yeah, death threats are the way to deal with that. That's morals for ya.

I was playing in bar bands when I was just under 15, and I never had one single problem. They'd ask the rest of the band "You gonna make sure he doesn't drink?" They'd go "Yep" and then it was "Ok, knock yourselves out." That was IT.

Kid, you just keep playing and don't let ANYONE hold you down. You've got this musician's support 110%, little dude. I'm gonna follow this, I wanna know how this turns out. Anyone living in Wisconsin, get hold of your senator or whoever the hell else you have to and let this kid fucking play. Seriously. This is so fucked up. I can't believe the things people get upset over. I suppose it wold be better if this kid was sitting in front of a fucking XBox all day, or glued to his damn cellphone or living on the internet. Then, everyone would be happy.

Fucking death threats over a kid playing guitar. You gotta be fucking kidding me.

What an awesome guitar player!

And what the fuck? Sending death threats because some kid is good at guitar? Gotta love society sometimes...

I get the impression that Wisconsin is kind of a shithole.

Kevin Smith even went so far as to liken it to Hell in Dogma.

This story broke a couple weeks ago on digg so let me share my opinion with you on it.

The child labor laws were put in place for a reason, to stop the exploitation of children for profit. Now while I DO NOT believe his parents were exploiting his talents, having him play guitar for profit still falls under the law.

Secondly, I do not think his rights are being infringed upon. As a minor I do not think he has a legal right to freedom of expression. (Now I could be completely wrong on this, and if anyone wants to correct me, my opinion would be changed. I'm speaking from a legal standpoint here, not my personal opinion)

Thirdly, I would like to hear him play a few different styles of music before declaring him a prodigy. Blues sounds great, but is really one of the most basic guitar styles and something taught to all beginning guitarists.

Finally, I would go hear this kid play in a heartbeat. He is a GREAT guitarist and very accomplished for his age. I haven't heard tone like that in a long time and I shudder to think about how good he'll be in a few years if he keeps up with the instrument. Make no mistake, I don't intend for my third point to take anything away from him as a musician, only that I'd like to hear more from him before declaring him as a prodigy. He also isn't being denied his right to play in public, only at bars. As far as I know he still has the ability to play at competitions, fairs, and other performance venues.

Power to the kid and I hope this ordeal only inspires him to work harder and get better at the instrument, I hope to be hearing about him in a couple years.

oh ya...and while Wisconsin pretty much sucks at everything....it is the BEST state to drink in. Booze is cheap and they people there aren't alcoholics....they're professionals. I am glad I learned to drink there.

ive said it once and ill say it again, People love to moan, thats all this is about. tis sad but itl happen again and again.

You're right-it is a hole!

My friend has been stationed there for two years and he'd rather kill himself than stay a minute longer! They're bass-ackwards to anything different which is why the poor child is catching hell right now.

I'd rather see him play in a bar (with supervision) than sit on the couch with a xbox 360 and a Wii!

I love child prodigy's-they should be free to express their art and talent. Who are they hurting anyway?

To those who oppose I have two words-STOP HATING!!

Hari pretty much nailed it. Someone's always gotta stick their moral nose into something. Yes, as manic said, it is a legal issue, but come on. No one thinks this kid's being "exploited", someone just wanted either attention or to fuck with someone and used the letter of the law to do it. I wasn't supposed to legally be playing in bars in NJ when I was younger, but it happened all the time. No one fucking cared.

In the cited example, I was around 15, and the other guys in the band were late teens, early twenties. So, I wasn't even the only one in the band who was underage. Out of the five of us, only two were over 21. And later, when I was 19, I was in a band where ALL of us were underage...we just signed something saying we wouldn't drink and that was that. Nobody...fucking...cared. But then again, we didn't have the internet and instantaneous attention, either.

But back to the point, someone always does have to come along and use their "morals" to fuck with someone. Across the bridge from me in Vermont, there was a big story a couple years ago where a teenage couple got fucked with by some religious-nut housewife. Guy was 18, his girlfriend 16. Both sets of parents knew they were active, both supported the relationship, both liked the other kid...and this bitch had to stick her nose in it, some neighbor who was so very "concerned". The guy wound up getting arrested for statuatory rape and by the letter of the law is now registered as a sex offender by the state of Vermont.

People...let folks do what they want if they're not hurting anyone. For fuck's sake.

Keep the kid out of the clubs. Parents permission or not. I've played the clubs my entire life and it is no place for a minor, I don't care how good he is.
He has the rest of his life ,after hes legal to play the gin mills. They are making the right decision.
As for death threats, now thats f@#ked up.

That kid is a great guitar player and people should just let him be. At least he has a good attitude about it and isn't letting jealous people or death threats get him down. I say he shouldn't worry about other people and just keep playing as long as he wants.

People can be real brave while sitting behind their little keyboards in mommy's basement. They're the cowards of society who wouldn't be able to deal with a real confrontation. Rock on, little dude. Screw all the haters.

Great response Adam!

That kid has some serious chops, and a sweet PRS axe ta boot.

I played in a few bars when I was very young as well.
Every club was different, but here are some of the hoops I had to jump thru:

  • Had to play 45 min. sets with 15 min. breaks.
  • Had to spend said breaks outside in the alley with the potheads & drug addicts, not inside with the drunks. This was challenging during Minnesota winters. This one made no sense to me.
  • Had to sign a release waiver. We really had no interest in drinking alcohol, but still, I can understand this one totally.
  • Had to be accompanied by an adult and sometimes a legal guardian. This was a tricky one, sometimes management would look the other way if one of the guys in your band was over 21. Other times they were strict and it had to be a parent, so one of our parents had to be there. They were cool about it and took turns.
  • No cash could pass into my hands. Either the parents or a band member "of age" had to accept the money, then I was paid when we were loading out.
  • I could have all the free pop I could drink and all the cigarette smoke I could inhale, but if they served food we had to order something to get the free stuff. We usually split some fries.

It never ceased to amaze me how many bar patrons tried to slip me drinks or drugs. They also thought it would be cool to have their "bitches" shamelessly flirt with us, which almost always scared the bejebus out of a 14 year old virgin, much to the delight of anyone within earshot - including my older bandmates.
It was still fun, and gave a kid some great locker room stories to tell.

These days things are way more uptight, and rightfully so with all the nutcases out there. Why anyone would threaten a kid with violence is beyond me.

He'll be fine. There are way more events and resources available to kids now. Studios have become more accessible and affordable, and every time you turn around there is some kinda "fest" happening, especially in the summer.

Playing the blues doesn't really help him much, though.
Blues = dingy bars and doesn't really like direct sunlight.

I'll echo Nostradamus. Blues bars are rough gigs. I'd not want a kid around that, even if I was there with a lead pipe in hand. People get stupid when drinkin' that much that constantly. Bars in general in snow country are a different head than in other parts of the US. If you haven't been there, go. Check it out, then dig why anyone would trip.

Saddest part, though, is that the kid COULD be doing sets in bars and then bein' rolled out by his folks, and if they'll do it, he should be allowed. Kid's got raw talent and some skill. Another decade of that, and we'll be readin' 'bout it for years.

Sad as hell that a talent like that is meetin' with haters. Just clowned.

Nostradamus is a smart dude. This is what I said "BARS ARE NO PLACE FOR KIDS " Hell ! I don't even like playing them and I've played them forever.
I'll take a fesival or street fair anyday. Besides, it's more of a concert setting and you don't have to put up with all the crap like you would in a club.

We don't have 'Blues Bars' in Melbourne, Australia. It's all House Music.

The closest to a 'Blues Bar' here are our local pubs that have cover bands performing songs that are popular on the radio these days and also your classic Bonjovi, Bryan Adams and Metallica songs.

I was DJing before I was 18 at different spots around town. I was introduced to the drug culture before I knew what ecstasy was. When I was 16, on Sunday nights I'd played a 2 hour set at a club called 'Heat' to a coked up Molly Meldrum and Elton John (I am not lying when I say that either) as they gayed about on the podium. I'd finish my set, have a Lemon Lime and Bitters and trek home for 3 hours sleep before I'd get up for school on Monday.

Whilst it was fun, and whilst I felt totally "cool, man", some things in life are worth waiting for. Ultimately, djing young did affect my schooling, even though I won't normally admit it.

It's like anything though. If you have a 12 year old who is aspiring to be a professional tennis player, of course tennis is going to get in the way of school.

It sounds to me like this kid is playing at 'blues bars' that make me think of the bar in 'The Blues Brothers'. If that's the case, or if the bars are remotely similar to that bar, then get him the hell out.

Simply, because it isn't the right environment for a child to be spending his time in, and you're a bad fucking parent if you encourage that shit. You're a good parent if you see the talent, and tell the kid to be patient, wait it out, and in the meantime further develop your guitar playing skills.

There's more to blues than a dirty old blues bar, and I don't think that kid has the ability to see that yet, and I certainly don't think the patrons in the bar are smart enough to appreciate such talent.

I look at it this way...

Yes it is dumb to threaten to kill somebody. However I am a firm believer in child labour laws and they should be followed. You have one exception on day and the next thing you know being and orphan= slave labour.

Um. He's 8. He doesn't belong in a bar, whether it's to play guitar
or drink a beer with his dad. He should be allowed to be booked
and play in public, if he chooses, but little boys don't belong in
bars. Sorry.
