I speak of course of an issue that has been the cause of contention and conflict within families for generations, to wit: Should the toilet paper roll be fed over the top of the spool, or under?

Speaking for myself I grew up in a household that was staunchly pro over. Unders were looked upon with suspicion and disdain if not outright contempt and their moral character was questioned. It was strongly suspected that such people voted Republican, also known as the eighth deadly sin under my parents roof.

I invite the unders among us to defend your position on this matter.

I was always pro-over. I never understood why anyone would put the roll with the flap coming from under the roll. To me, that made about as much sense as buttering the underside of one's toast. I'm pretty sure my wife is pro-under, though. We solved the problem in our house by not having a roll dispenser. Instead, we have a stand-up roll holder that holds about 4 rolls, freely. You just grab the roll off the top, take what you need, and put it back. I actually like this arrangement. 😀

OK, Its about time this family splitting issue was tackled. Over...always, and please allow me to explain a litttle.....By trade, I am an electrician, 20 yrs now, and one of the main aspects of my job is pulling wire...which comes on spools ( kinda like the tp rolls). Now when your just an apprentice, your taught that when pulling, the reels should all be fed from the top, or over as explained in previous posts. This prevents excess runoff of wire ( or TP) when you have reached the amout pulled off the reel that you desire.

Thank you sir, for your well reasoned post. My first "real" job was with a small firm that produced wiring harnesses for construction equipment, traliers and commercial lawn mowers among other things. We also dealt with large spools of wire which were always fed over the top. Much more efficent as you noted, and the only way to go.

This is an issue for the ages and there is a definite answer for it.

Over is the ONLY way to go!

I have this issue brewing at my home since my daughter's moved back in and when she makes the vital mistake of under, I immediately correct the problem by changing the roll to over. There will be no "unders" in my home! Simply unacceptable!😛
 
If there is a cat in the household, then UNDER for very obvious reasons. :cat:
 
Clearly most of you are deluded. Under is the ONLY appropriate way. Unlike wire, toilet paper does not have the weight that would create any excess roll off. Also, take into consider those tp holders that aren't quite far enough away from the wall to easily accomodate your favorite plush triple ply sham-wow/sandpaper amalgam of your preference. With under, the weight of the roll becomes an asset instead of a hindrance when trying to pull an adequate amount of tp from the rollwithout it tearing prematurely. NOTHING is more irritating than having to use TP scraps for my hygiene needs.
Let's say you've got something on your hand by mistake. Don't lie and say it doesn't happen, cause it does. Drinking increases this risk. With the over method you have to touch the roll itself. Guess what happens when you touch a roll of tp with wet hands? it soaks through, freakin gross. But if you just have to pull the little under tail the only paper you touch is the paper you're going to use right away.
Most importantly, accuracy in relation to ease greatly improves with the under method. I'm a girl, unlike you guys, I can't just shake my junk and stuff it like you can. I have to use paper EVERY SINGLE TIME. It's messy business and the fewer hands involved in the process the better (makes for fewer hands I have to wash when I'm done... who wants me to make them a sammich hahaha) . So if you have to do the awkward reach back and tug for a good 4 square length, it's much easier to do under than over.

Therefore under is clearly the better alternative.

P.S. due to my cat, I use the sideways method since we have to hide the paper in the linen cabinet, but if it weren't for the stupid cat I would be rocking the Under.

I wipe my arse with my fingers, and clean them afterwards. But only if there's a lot of shit caked under my fingernails.

A spirited, dare I say passionate rebuttal, and well spoken. That having been said I think the link posted by our friend Backstep refutes most if not all of your arguments in favor of the under position.
