That's an old joke (or variations thereof) that lots of people seem to aim at vegetarians, including my uncle, as I recall, until he later became one. A vegetarian that is, not a head of lettuce.

Wow. While I'm not necessarily supporting PETA's position, I do find it pretty appalling and disappointing what some people find funny. Kindness and respect go a long way in this world (and with me) and I sure as hell don't differentiate between species when I offer them. What goes around comes around folks.

I agree, however I am just poking fun. No harm, I do respect PETA most of the time. However, I found this tactic a litte absured and couldn't help it.

Here is my question for PETA.

Why is it okay for an alligator to stalk, follow, trap and then eat a bird, after using its teeth to grasp it, not let go, shake it like crazy then eat it sometimes still alive. Why is PETA not protesting the jungles, swamps, and the plains of Africa. Why isn't PETA sending protest letters to Killer Whales, Lions or Tigers.

Just something I wonder.

Well, the feeling I get from PETA is they do not consider humans part of a natural food chain. We have the intelligence and ability to find other means of food. Their thought I imagine is anytime we seek food from a creature that seeks food of others, there is nothing but the highest chance we do it harm, as death in our eyes in never a pleasant thing. And the death of a 'thing' to satisfy another 'thing' that probably had options seems selfish. I can't speak for PETA as I'm not educated with their doctrine, but I'm certain those animals can't read. 😉

On a side note, I have heard of people giving animals like cats a vegetarian diet. As a consequence, the cats when blind from lack of certain nutrients needed. The cats did not have the ability and higher thought to drive to Walmart and pick up a pack of vitamins they found out they needed after searching the internet. Now taking away wild animals from their natural diet would probably kill many. So I'm just guessing, PETA is leaning in this direction as a reflection of the human mind and ability in their eyes to avoid what they see as a mass murder.

We actually have found such means of attracting attention to be a very successful first step in starting dialogues about the mistreatment and abuse of animals. This conversation would be evidence of that.



Please know that PETA doesn’t throw paint on people or destroy private property. As a nonprofit, educational organization, PETA maintains a strict creed of nonviolence and advocates no action that is dangerous to any animal—human or nonhuman. PETA works very hard to stop cruelty to animals through pamphlets, billboards, letters, ads, articles, peaceful demonstrations, humane education in schools, and various campaigns.



If it were true that humans were carnivores, then we would not have to cook meat in order to safely consume it, nor would vegetarian diets be healthier than meat-heavy diets are. The fact that people who refrain from eating meat obtain so many health benefits from doing so (see http://www.GoVeg.com/healthConcerns.asp for some further information) is pretty strong evidence that people are better off as herbivores, not carnivores.



You are, of course, absolutely correct that pain is involved in meat production. Given that meat production is completely unnecessary, inflicting this pain is wrong (since it is wrong to cause unnecessary pain or suffering). In fact not only is meat production unnecessary, it contributes to a host of problems for the environment, human health, and the hungry people of the world. Additionally, people with diseases should care how many animals it takes to find a cure, because the longer it takes to develop cures, the more people will suffer from these diseases. Animal testing is a notoriously ineffective way of finding cures for human diseases. Medical historians tell us that the majority of true medical breakthroughs have occurred in the clinic, not in the animal lab, including the link between the pancreas and diabetes, plaque in the arteries and heart disease, cigarette smoking and lung cancer, etc.—the list goes on and on. Sophisticated alternatives to animal tests (such as computer simulations and cell and tissue cultures) are faster, safer, and less expensive. It is the general unreliability of animal testing which induced the National Academies to call for a shift away from using animals to test drugs for humans. (not from eating meat) Your organization may not outwardly condone the things I have spoken of, but these things are done in your name and you love the publicity that supposedly brings the mistreatment of animals to the forefront. They do not.

Commercials comparing a young girl having sex to dogs and cats being spayed and neutered are ridiculous and those that compare the dog breeders to the KKK are in the worst taste possible. If you think a "dialogue" started by this type of foolishness will make people aware of animal abuse then there is no hope for you as a human being.

I despise the things your organization has done over the years not for the purpose behind them, but for the way in which they are carried out. It s the off the wall type of publicity that you seek that encourages the paint tossers in the first place, but you in the "PETA Cult" are blinded to that.

This is why you will never see support from me or those like me. I have posted your comments on a discussion forum that has over 70,000 members and you may (or may not) like to know that there have not been many kind words said about the organization you represent.

This larest "cruelty to seakittens" campaign has opened your organization up to ridicule and has most likely done you more harm than good. It certainly has done nothing for fish.

I and others like me have no problem with what you do for abused cats and dogs, but when you start in on the animals we breed, hunt, or catch for food, then you are just being ridiculous.

You have a right to your opinion and your beliefs. I respect that. The rest of us have a right to ours and your organization does NOT respect that.

In their eyes we are wrong for consuming meat products and do not see the foolishness of our ways and must be educated by the PETA gods.

Ingrid Newkirk, founder and president of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said that upon her death, she wants one of her ears "removed, mounted" and sent to Ottawa to help the government "in hearing, for the first time perhaps, the screams of the seals, bears, raccoons, foxes, and minks bludgeoned, trapped, and sometimes skinned alive for their pelts."


Newkirk said that she wants her body parts to be used to draw "attention to needless animal suffering and exploitation" after her death.


She asked that her other ear be displayed outside an India slaughterhouse "to remind all who do business there that the screams of the cattle who are slaughtered within its walls are heard around the world."


The U.S. government was also singled out.


The 59-year-old activist asked that "one of my eyes be removed, mounted, and delivered to the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a reminder that PETA will continue to be watching the agency until it stops poisoning and torturing animals in useless and cruel experiments."


She also asked that her skin be made into leather purses, her feet be crafted into umbrella stands "in remembrance of the elephant-foot umbrella stands . . . I saw as a child" and her liver vacuum-packed and sent to France in protest of foie gras.


As for the rest of her body, it will be used as a "human barbecue to remind the world that the meat of a corpse is all flesh, regardless of whether it comes from a human being or another animal, and that flesh foods are not needed," Newkirk wrote.


The controversial organization, which boasts two million members worldwide, has been an outspoken critic of many of Canada's environmental practices, including the annual East Coast seal hunt, which it describes as "Canada's shame."


The hunt, which began Monday in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, gives sealers licence to kill 280,000 harp seals this year.
