Producers: do you ever leave the room in the middle of a scene?

Hello everyone!

There’s something a bit odd/amusing that I sometimes do during a shoot and I am curious to know if other producers do the same thing.

See, it’s not uncommon for me to leave the camcorder alone and temporarily leave the room while the models are busy doing the tickling thing. I simply signal to them to continue what they’re doing. Typically I use that time to go to the bathroom, to check my emails or something like that. Naturally I could wait until the scene is over, but I figure my actual presence isn’t always required and that it does no harm, as long as I make sure the camcorder is well positioned and secure. After all, the camcorder shouldn't be moving all the time during a shoot.

It might seem silly, but I kind of like the idea of leaving the tickler alone with her 'victim' for a while, listening to the laughter and banter while I’m elsewhere in the apartment, mentally picturing what’s going on. Besides, it can make for neat surprises when I review the footage later. In any case, I don’t leave for very long. Like two minutes at most.

So, do other producers do this too sometimes? I guess this mostly applies to producers who work alone, as opposed to a team that includes more than one person that can operate the camcorder.

question, why dont YOU tickle the models instead letting someone else do it?
I'm no producer but i guess when you have to go to the bathroom you have to 😉
Otherwise i think it's maybe a bit rude to leave a room and do something else. Cause they're like guests in your tickle room/appartment. But that's my opinion

You have to remember that while this may be in his apartment, when this is going on it's become a place of business. My office is in my home, when I bring company in there to watch a movie or play video games or something, I treat them one way, when I bring someone in to provide a service like install computer equipment or work on the wiring, I treat them another way - I'm polite and recognize their worth as fellow human beings, but I don't treat them like my guests because they're there to do a job, the same as if the office or studio was located in a separate building. The models are contracted workers just like if he'd hired someone to paint the walls, both are people with feelings, but it's a business relationship and the models would probably be the first to say that.

Wow, didn't expect that at all. I thought I was just sharing a vaguely amusing anecdote, but it seems some people are taking it a lot more seriously than they should. Shoots are business deals, that's true, and it's important to be respectful and professional. But at the same time they're also relatively casual and friendly events, and I don't think the models mind it at all if I take a moment to do something else that may or may not be related to the shoot while they continue the action, especially if I let them know that I'll be right back and it's ok if they go on. I figure they're having fun and won't miss me for a minute or two.

As for why I don't tickle the models myself, well, um, why don't you ask that question to all the producers who do a lot of F/F videos? What, is it also rude not to tickle a model you've hired for a tickling video?

By the way, based on what you're saying I'm assuming that if you have guests at home and you're, say, watching a movie, you sit down the whole time without ever going to the bathroom or getting a snack. You just stay there, not moving, because it would be rude to leave them watching the movie without you for a couple minutes, right?

Anyway, forget I ever said anything. This thread was clearly a bad idea.

when ya gotta pee... ya gotta pee

Heh, well, to be fair, it's not like I have to go so bad that I absolutely need to do it in the middle of a scene. It's just that I don't think my presence is essential the whole time, so I figure I might as well take care of some other things while the models are working. Maybe the models even like not being observed the whole time, I don't know.

Also, I've found that I tend to move the camcorder around and mess with the zoom too often when I film, which I can't help but think can get annoying for some people. It's good to make a video dynamic, but it shouldn't be overdone and it's best to include some static shots that last for more than 10 seconds. I find it easier to leave the camcorder alone for a while if I walk around a bit, take a minute to go to the bathroom or get a quick drink of water, for instance. But maybe I'm just being silly. Or rude, as someone suggested. In any case, it's not something I do very often.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that these have to be SERIOUS BIDNESS, just that the social mores we apply to guests in our home don't apply to those who come in for professional reasons. You can choose to be completely casual and fun, but you don't have to be, it's not rude behavior to treat it as it is. Obviously putting aside anything else making the models comfortable and have fun makes good business sense in a lot of ways, and can make your own job a lot more fun, but the point is, it's up to you if you're going to do that because it's your business.

Nothing wrong with leaving the room and letting the models do what they do best!

That's quite alright, I didn't really have a problem with what you said. It actually made a lot of sense. It's more Peter's comments that rubbed me the wrong way. I especially don't understand his question about why I don't do the tickling myself. But no matter.

To be honest, if I'm shooting F/F tickling I never leave the room because I want to make sure I'm catching everything. I don't always get a chance to move around so when I have two models in I make the most of it. Even if I'm doing a static shot, I like to keep one hand on the camera as one model will always inadvertently stand in front of the lens or block a light and so I want to be able to get a better shot when I need to.

I don't think it matters from the model's point of view...I'm probably too laid back the rest of the time, and I actually have a far worse habit of tying models up (on solo shoots) and then remembering that I need to pee, finish making a drink or typing an email, fetch something from the car etc. They're generally a good humoured bunch though and used to my quirks 🙂

Haha dude, Short tempered much?

I wasnt calling you rude or something. It's just an OPINION that i find it rude to leave the room to do something else (like watching a movie, go to ticklingforum etc) when you have people in your house. And having models in your house is not like having an engineer fixing your computer. (just my opinion)like your opinion is that leaving the room is not rude. I respect that, you wanted our opinion on this matter right? I give MY opinion to you but it's different than yours and then you go all dramaqueen on me... Geezzz.

And for my question why you don't tickle your models, it was just a NICE, curious question dude. I was only interested on the fact since you also have a tickle fetish like i do. But i was just curious do you only like watching girls tickle them, or is it just business for you. Cause when i compare it to myself, I would defenitely tickle the models instead of only watching/filming
Sorry for being interested in your opinion on that matter..

You've really shown your true colours😉

I'm not a producer, but I don't know anything about the inner-workings of the business... However, I just always assumed producer/director/camera dude was always there while the camera's running...

Now that I've thought of it more.... "Leaving the room in the middle of a tickle scene... Like a Boss!"

I'm no producer, but I could understand taking a laid-back approach to allowing your models' chemistry to unfold without your presence--for more candid behavior. It might make the play seem more natural. On the same token, I'm paranoid of thieves, and wouldn't wanna leave a bunch of strange people unattended in my house.

That's kind of how I feel. I like to make the shoots casual enough so that the models feel at ease and offer a natural performance. I figure that if I show I'm not overly concerned about what's going on (and not super turned on, for that matter), to the point that I'm comfortable enough to move around for a minute and let them do their thing, they'll feel more at ease and might even act more spontaneously. I don't do it because I really feel the urge to do something else before a scene is over, it's more like a technique for appearing more casual, hoping it will help the models relax. Also, like I mentioned before, it's a trick I use to prevent me from messing with the camcorder and tripod too much.

On the same token, I'm paranoid of thieves, and wouldn't wanna leave a bunch of strange people unattended in my house.

Maybe I'm a bit naive, but I'm not worried about that. Besides, it's not like I leave the models alone in the apartment so I can go to the convenience store. I just leave the room for a minute. It can be as minor as me leaving the camcorder for a few moments so I can get a quick drink of water from the fridge about 2 yards from the camcorder (naturally, the models also get water whenever they need it). The models would have to be amazing thieves to rob me during a shoot, especially since I can always hear the laughter and banter.

I'm not a producer, but I play one on TV.

I usually don't leave. I am quite particular about all manner of things and prefer to hang about and ensure lights are working, camera is working, focus is proper, non-ticklish spots are being deemphasized, etc.

The only time I leave is when we have a large shoot and things get a bit chaotic. That is to say, if my PA has things under control in the tickle room, I will occasionally go into the next room and make sure any models in the waiting area are comfortable and not too freaked out by the shrieks of laughter piercing the air. I worry about that, since most of the models we work with are genuine girls next door so the experience has to be absolutely surreal for them.

I don't use a tripod except when I'm filming solo POV stuff, so I can't leave the room. I've shot with producers that do shoot with tripods and do leave the room. Usually to answer phone calls, doorbells, etc.
