Does it bother you when there are misspellings of common words in posts that most adults SHOULD know?
It REALLY bothers me because most of the words that are badly misspelled are not hard words. Like 'discussion'. Someone wrote 'discution'. & 'deside' instead of 'decide'.
And this is from a 20-something, not a child or teenager.
Would it be wrong for me to correct these errors in a reply post?
I'm talking about common every day BASIC english language words.
Oh, believe me, I am NO English professor.
Why do I care? I don't know why I do, but . . . I do.

I find it a bit disturbing, but what can you do. you just have to go with the flow. :wavingguy

When you take into account the direction our public school systems have been going the last twenty to thirty years, tis not that suprising. It seems like effort is enough, never mind if the answers are correct or not.We must not hurt little their feelings by telling them they are wrong,it might scar them for life! And as far as a reply post,i would not suggest that,i doubt that it would help in any case.

also gotta take in simple things like: typing so damn fast they neglect to check spelling, not caring if they misspell or not, dyslexia, etc. me, i am an excellent linquist, rarely make errors in typing or handwriting...but i rarely use capitalization on posts or correct punctuation. why? cuz that's me...and some people may misspell on purpose because that is how they roll. their own typing style for forums and whatnot. hell, hackers and online gamers misspell words and use ASCII symbols in typed speech. so, don't let it get you too riled up...just let those that misspell like crazy go on and hope for the best.

I feel your pain Bart, lol, as a legal secretary I literally start shaking when seeing a bunch of typos or if I see "you're" and "your" used wrong for instance. Surely we all make typing mistakes and I think some just type fast and don't proofread, the horror, lol. But I just deal with it. Some people I imagine would be a bit mad if you started correcting them but I could be wrong.

i'm not exactly the best when it comes to spelling but i do my best, but i do agree with you when it comes to badly misspelled words

O fp mpyovr oy gtp, yo,r yp yo,r nuy O lmpe O ,slr do,o;st ,odyslrd sd er;;/ Dp gst nr oy gtp, ,r yp vpttrvy [rp[;r!

Perhaps, I might find it a little disconcerting sometimes. There are times when it is difficult to decipher meaning when there are an overwhelming amount of mistakes. However, I'm more annoyed if I see a previous post of my own and spot a careless error.

As for pubic education stateside, if the emphasis is on 'correct' answers, then we really are going in the wrong direction. I don't believe that is necessarily the case, however.

My spelling has suffered a lot over the last couple of years. I try and proof read everything I post and I still miss stuff. But these are typos for the most part. If I'm not certain how to spell a word, I'll usually take a moment to look it up in the dictionary.

What I find more irritating is the sloppy lazy english. Like "N E 1 going 2 Nest?"

good call cloud2k!

I knew I liked you.

Seriously, my nails are long and I'm frequently typing on the fly, in between patient appts, etc. I'm a good speller by nature in general but sometimes my fingernails get stuck between keys, etc. Bah, I could care less. If I have to worry what you think of my typing skills (or anything else about me) then you're not worth my time.
XOXO

Yeah, of course it bugs me. But I can't see any point in saying anything about it. I'll even preserve the errors when I quote people, because who am I to correct what they actually wrote? :cool2: Sure, proper spelling would enhance readability, but what are you going to do? 😛

You know what I'd like even better though? If people would skip lines between paragraphs. That would make a lot of people's posts so much easier to read!

It's annoying, but what can you do? Considering some members are young and are simply used to shortening and misspelling of words because of forums like this and instant messengers. How many forums and messengers have spell check? If they did, would you use it?
As long as you still understand what the person is saying, it's not all that bad.

Spoken like a true genius.

It's annoying to me since I'm an English major and am probably a little OCD when it comes to making sure I spell things right. However, it's one thing to make a typo or an honest mistake, it's another to spell things wrong on purpose.

Now that shit gets on my nerves.

So let me make this perfectly clear... the word is COOL not KOOL or KEWL or KEYOOL, got it?

Thank you.

Fin.

I know I make my share of mistakes from rushing sometimes. And yes I get annoyed at others making mistakes, but who are we to correct others here?

American English has a lot of different spellings to English English.

Does that make sense? 😀

For some people on this forum English isn't their first language so it will be very difficult for them.

My excuse? My fingers and brain don't work well together after several cocktails. Go figyore.

I'm not talking about being off a letter or 2 due to typing fast.
I'm referring to blatant misspelling of common simple words like 'discussion' or 'rate' instead of 'rait'. (Yes, someone actually spelled it like that)
These are little words that are missplelled because the poster doesn't know HOW to spell these words.
It makes the poster seem unintelligent.
Apparently they don't care how they come across to the rest of the community.
I will not publicly correct posters' obvious errors.
I just wanted your opinions on this subject.

If they don't know that they are spelling wrong then they won't change the way they spell. They must think that they are spelling things right. Anyway, for all I know I could be one of the people you are talking about.

All i ask is that you dont misspell flatulence. 😎

i never use capital letters, except when writing my stories..i type fast also..i agree that typos can be annoying, but what can you do? not much i'm afraid..it does bug me however when someone uses letters instead of words...

u for you....r for are...etc...

Spelling or grammar was ever my strong suite, I don’t apologize for it, I’m more successful with mathematics and logic which is why I chosen computer programming and networking for my career.

People have a tendency to look down on others because they are not fluent in English; they feel a need to belittle them because they have a personal issue with it.

If people like me had an issue with none computer savvy users, we would incorporate a computer literacy program which would forbid any one access to computers and the internet if they don’t reach a predetermine criteria set by people more advance in the field.. Which mean all you with problems would never be able to voice them in the net.

Most of the top selling authors do not write their books, they dictated their stories on a tape give it someone with a degree in English and they translated it to a selling book format.

This sort of reminds me of how racism started; someone with short comes out of their ass, looking down on someone else because they didn’t fit his ideal of how a person should be. Just to make themselves feel superior.

sorry i apoligise for my writing,
after years of msn messenger you get used to writing in simple terms,
on here i shall try and write normally 😀

Oh God! This is such a hot button for me. Not only does horrid spelling get under my skin, but so does bad grammar. When I see adults and even teenagers and children who should know better spelling words incorrectly, it gives me a little more of an insight as far as they go. Granted, everyone makes a typo here and there. That can be easily overlooked on my end as long as it is an obvious typo, but please don't try to pass something like "wrighter" off as a typo for "writer". When it comes to spelling and grammar, people who don't know when to use the proper form of "two", "to" or "too" or "your" and "you're", etc. is ridiculous. Or not knowing that you have to take the "e" out of "have" before turning it into "having". Grr!

Chris usually gets to hear my rants about people and their bad spelling and grammar. A few times a week he will hear me vent about the eye bleeding words I have to read when playing World of Warcraft or even reading this forum. I also recall that he "warned" me about some of the terrible spelling and grammar that goes on on here when I first joined. Even then he knew about my pet peeve.

I went to a public school, but I think you would have to try to not learn how to spell correctly. It never made sense to me. How could someone just not know how to spell when they are being taught how to every day? I've always been a strong speller. I've even been in spelling bees. I suppose it's just one of those enigmas that will never be discovered and figured out. I don't necessarily blame public schools, but more or less the environment around the child in their early years of education. At the same time, I can be a bit hypocritical. I correct my sister and mother's grammar quite often, but never their spelling. You will never hear me use the word "aint". What the hell is that anyways? An alternative for "isn't"? I digress.

I give some people the benefit of the doubt when I read posts. If I see an error I usually continue on to see what other errors there may be, if any at all. Sometimes when you're just on a good rant, punctuation, spelling and grammar aren't on your mind. I tend to re-read my posts before I post them to make sure I don't have any typos and that everything makes sense. I wish more people would give us that same courtesy. Also, please, if you are uncertain about how to spell something, take a minute of your time to look into it. If you don't, then how will you ever learn to spell correctly?

But, as I always say, Spell check is your friend! 😱

Personally, i tend to make a large amount of typo's and generally thats because, as cloud suggested, i'm typing a mile a minute. So long as the point get's accross, is my main concern. However, people should also remember that some people here have english as a second langauge, also for a quick example, the Canadian Dictionary, and the American Dictionary are different. Ie, American's spell words differently then they are spelled in Canada.
