Southpaw Freaks

Well, I ain't a southpaw, but I may very well be a freak.

:wow: (usual look on my face; and yes, I'm also blue)

Me!

*holding up left hand, showing permanent ink smear along edge of palm for verification*

haha! I use that excuse to get out of writing my work up on the white-boards at uni!

All my left hand is good for is flipping the bird at other drivers on the road (right hand on steering wheel, of course). 😀

I was a southpaw when I was young but back in those days the nuns at school wouldn't allow us to write with our left hand so I had to learn with my right hand. Whenever I'd switch to my left hand I'd get my knuckles rapped with a ruler. Ouch!

I still do lots of stuff with my left but writing isn't at the top of the list.

Right here...or left here, um...nevermind!

Actually I'm the exact opposite of Terry Bradshaw: I write right and throw left...also bat right. Unfortunately I have no real talent at any of that so I guess it doesn't matter...lol

My Dad's Japanese wife was born left-handed, but all kids in Japanese schools are forced to write with their right hand until it becomes natural for them.

Earlier I joked about not being left-handed, but seriously, it's sad how many cultures view left-handedness as being unnatural. I've heard that left-handed people are more artistic than right-handed ones. I think that's cool! If you're a lefty, don't let anyone try to change that, and be proud of your "freakiness"! :cool2:

I'm a lefty. I shoot my M-16 left-handed, write left-handed, shoot hoops left-handed, bat left-handed, mast--nevermind.

Definite southpaw with writing and most other stuff. With the computer though I use my right hand for the mouse.

Lil' lefty here, and so is my 5 yr old!🙂

Do any other lefties catch grief from righties about having lefty stuff in your own house? I have friends who whine about my mouse being on the wrong side, my scissors and my can opener being *wrong*...:ignite: Yes, I tell them where to go and how to get there.

My hubby, bless him, just adapts:Kiss2:

Bella

Got one here too 😛

Power's on the right side, finesse is on the left

(throw, bat, kick, arm wrestle right handed; write, draw, paint, and eat with left hand).

Wow!

We sure do have a lot of mutants...err...lefties on the Forum! I'm basically ambidextrous, although there are certain sports that I am better at with one rather than the other hand/side. I attribute that mostly to having practiced with the "better" hand. Q

Hey, guess who else is a lefty? :veryhappy :blaugh: :happyfloa :grouphug: :wavingguy :santasmil :jester: :bouncybou :dogpile: My teachers also tried to indoctrinate me to write with my right hand but I basically told them to go fuck themselves. (And I wonder why I left school with no qualifications.🙄 )

Sorry to hear about that experience Jan. Apprently it's more common nowadays than you think. Apparently certain narrow minded people regard it as the mark of the Devil. Twats........

Being a GDI like me has it's drawbacks as well as it benefits......

Hey Flatfoot, try firing an SA80 left-handed! Typical British army eh? Cheap arse bastards couldn't be bothered to cater to us lefties. It one of the reasons that I'm hesitating about joining up.

Good for you, Bella! That's exactly what I was talking about when I said many cultures view left-handedness negatively. We righties need to be put in our place--the ones that complain, anyway. Often I wish my left hand could do more than type (aided by my rightie, of course). 🙂

Interesting Fact: the Latin for right is Dexter. The Latin for left is Sinister. No wonder we're unpopular!

Maybe that's why I was known as Poindexter in school. 😀

In French, "gauche" means "left", which is also an adjective used to describe something done with poor form. I can't remember what word meant "right". I guess I've been out of high school for too many years.

Jim, a lot of the weapons we have don't really cater to lefties, either. At least the M-9 pistol can have the magazine eject button switched around for left-handed shooters, but usually Officers, Staff NCOs, and MPs are the only ones who get to use them. I only know how to use it because I'm a marksmanship coach. The M-16 ain't so bad, but when you're on the firing line with other shooters, it's irritating getting hit in the face with their hot brass.

The French word for right is "droit". Perhaps this reflects why to do something adroitly means to do it with style. :blaugh: I'm glad I answered that one before Biggles did! Neener neener neeeeeeeeneeerrrrrrrrr!!!!! 😛😛😛

Interestingly RMP was one of the two jobs I was reccomeneded for based on the results of my initial tests. (The R stands for Royal.) The other was the Intel Corps.

I'm a mamby-pamby-ambi like Q. I write OK with the right hand because of practice, and like a kid with the left. I read somewhere that ambi's are less efficient because they first have to settle on which side they're going to use. I guess it's true. Sometimes I start a task with one side and find I do it better with the other, so I switch. Somebody here said "power with the left, finesse with the right. With me, it's similar, except it's soul on the left and accuracy on the right. My kids aren't ambi, one's righty and one's lefty.

BTW, in sewing terminology the fabric's "left" side = the "wrong" side = the reverse side, or the side that will be unseen, the inside of the garment. Buttons on mens clothing are arranged for righties, but it is the opposite on womens clothing. This current standard comes from the custom of dressmakers who did it for their own convenience and that of the servants who dressed noblewomen. I also read somewhere that in olden days people would keep their right hand clean and shake right hands in greeting, but never the left, because the left was for dirty tasks such as wiping in the outhouse.

T'aint nothing old about that custom. Arabs still do it today. Once they've squatted in the desert and curled one out they'll wipe their left hand in under and give it a brisk scrape on a rock. If you ever greet an arab, NEVER wave with your right hand, because they will take great offence at it.
