The great 2010 FIFA World Cup thread

I'm just surprised the SMS jokes haven't started circulating yet. About ten minutes after any catastrophe is the usual time.

Maybe not on SMS, but it's all over Twitter like a rash. 😉

Good win for Germany, very convincing display.
Unfortunately for them, if you start the tournament that good, you're bound not to win it...
I was very disappointed with Serbia, whom I regarded as the "dark horse" of the tournament. They looked like they were completely lacking ideas.
Tomorrow, finally, it's Holland time. also tomorrow we get to see Cameroon with Samuel Eto'o.

Italy are playing Paraguay today as well. Haven't heard a great deal about the Italians in the build-up, but you look through their squad and there are a few names that stick out... I don't reckon they'll win it, but I can't quite bring myself to write them off either. Cameroon versus Japan sounds like it might be worth watching too. Should be a good day 😀

It's all go now. 😀
My housemate's an Aussie so we kicked back with a few beers and watched the game last night - me supporting Germany for no reason other than to laugh at him when the convicts got their asses handed to them.
Caught the Holland/Denmark game while I was at work today, and the (somewhat boring) first half of Japan vs. Cameroon as well.

Ahh, I love when this tournament comes around. ^_^

Big disppointment in Cameroon. No midfield at all, just a collection of random long balls from defense to offense. Even a striker of Samuel Etoo's calibre can't do anything with such a tactic, and indeed he had hardly touched the ball.

Have to say the Germany v Australia game aside, this World Cup hasn't been too special so far, Hopefully we get some cracking games as the stakes are raised

World Cups are rarely spectacles during the group stages. That's what happens when you have mighty footballing nations like New Zealand and Korea DPR trying to lose by as few goals as possible.

The used long balls because the Japanese players are short. However, Japan did a pretty good job.

Playing virtually without a midfield is never a good tactic, no matter how tall the opponents are...

Anyway, a rather dull day of games today. The finest moment of the day was the last minute equalizer by New Zealand - they played terrible the entire game, but that goal was sheer skill, by both the passer and the scorer.

I'm pulling for the good old USA but my prediction is Netherlands vs. Spain for the final and this prediction is looking good after Brazil's performance today as they were the team that presented the biggest problem to my prediction.

😵

If Spain's going down, there's room at the top! Go USA!

:woot:

I have no idea why Spain went with the 4-5-1 with Torres on the bench...

Needless to say I bet you will see a partner starting with Villa next game.

Jesus Christ, I didn't even know Switzerland has a national soccer team...and they beat Spain! What's next?

Switzerland definitely has some talented and experienced players, not near the level of Spain, but they are decent.

I am a Seattle Sounders fan and we will be getting Blaise Nkufo on our team after the World Cup so I have been paying attention to the Swiss nationals.

Good to know. The Sounders need every bit of help to get back into the playoff race (see: score goals!!!)

Anyways, while nothing's over yet, I, too was shocked by Spains loss.

They outplayed the Swiss big time, but just didn't (couldn't) kick the ball in the net.

Still, along with Brazil and Germany, Spain is in the top-3 of teams that have impressed me the most/played the best in my opinion.

But I'm a greenhorn, so what do I know? 😀

Great day for Switzerland of course. :cheer: I hope they'll confirm against Chile and Honduras.

This thread seems to be getting some views so I'm gonna put my best teams of the day thing here. I'm curious to see others as well. Haven't seen today's games yet because I'm "working," but they're all recorded and raring to go.
Day 1: South Africa
2: South Korea
3: Germany
4: Netherlands

here's just the last post I had on the other thread minus the I'm talking to myself tangent, because hopefully I'm no longer talking to myself.

Another relatively shitty day. Cristiano Ronaldo definitely wins biggest ass of the day diving maybe fifteen times and the ref buying it about ten of those. Brazil were the only team with a win but they played 105th ranked North Korea, conceded a goal, and only scored two. New Zealand pulled a stunning last minute goal to tie which was exciting, but I'd say the most entertaining team to watch was the Ivory Coast (though it may just be those bright orange jerseys), I expect them to get out of the group of death.

Day 5: Ivory Coast

Day 6 brought the start of the second round, and it turns out my best team of day one, the hosting South Africa, are not meant to be. Chile performed awesome today, Switzerland played with and upset second-seeded Spain, and Uruguay thrashed South Africa. I'm gonna give it to Switzerland for the huge upset, and don't be surprised if Spain doesn't make it out of this group.

Day 6: Switzerland

I don't know anything about soccer, but Argentina looked vicious. And it could've been a lot worse.

At least, we have a good goalkeeper.

That hurts. BUT, I'm from the USA and we actually do have a great goalkeeper. However, I refuse to root for the United States because rooting for them is simply nothing more than jumping on the trendy band wagon that is the fans of American sports culture. Nobody over here gives a shit about soccer, then suddenly the United States is in some competition on the World Level and now everyone is a fan of soccer suddenly. I cannot root for team USA when soccer is NOT EVEN A TOP 4 Sports Category over here (Baseball, football, basketball and hockey actually far outweigh soccer in popularity. Even Golf and tennis also overshadow soccer in popularity by a landslide in the states).

Because of those facts listed above, I choose to only root for my ancestry countries. I'm mostly English, and if it weren't for my roots across the pond coming over here at some point in time I wouldn't be living in the states anyways, so I owe my loyalty to them in the Cup.
