The Official Sammi-chan Fan Club Thread

But that would indicate to me that Star Wars was always planned to be a trilogy, even though the other two chapters weren't assured. And trilogy is an inefficient term, as the plan was nine chapters.

You make a good point, considering the nine chapter layout. But from a production standpoint, ANH was made with no consideration to the other two films. They'd sorta be a "pleasant surprise." Which is why I say as a movie, it wasn't meant to be a trilogy. Because the first one was made as though it'd be the only one. And the first draft of the story one contained one chapter. Yes, by the time it was filmed, there were three scripts for three stories. But there was only one film on the drawing board. Which is where I'm coming from.

Btw, I'm Sammi. Nice to meet ya. n_n

From an audience standpoint, certainly. From Lucas's standpoint, it was meant to be a multi-part saga once he realized that his whole vision wouldn't fit into one film. Anything else would be semantics.

Because the first one was made as though it'd be the only one. And the first draft of the story one contained one chapter.

The very first draft was only about seven pages, if you want to be really technical. That's not even enough for a short film.

Depends upon the drawing board. Certainly, from 20th Century Fox's perspective, one film. Never from Lucas's perspective is where I'm coming from. I guess it all depends upon what you

Hi, Sammi. I know who you are. I still don't believe in online relationships, and no amount of modding or ignorant, incorrect theories by Timewarp will change my mind. You don't have to hate someone in order to think that his/her actions make no sense, or to disagree with his/her worldview. But I digress.

I was actually incorrect about the nine chapters. From scifi.about.com:

Here is a quote from a George Lucas interview done on July 19th 1979:

"The first script was one of six original stories I had written in the form of two trilogies. After the success of Star Wars I added another trilogy. So now there are nine stories. The original two trilogies were conceived of as six films of which the first film was number four."

So, there we have it.

Lucas wanted to make a trilogy out of it but knew that, at the time, science-fiction was not a very big pull in the United States. He wanted to leave a portion of the story line open (Darth Vader escaping) but he also gave A New Hope an ending which could end the story if the movie wasn't successful. I'd say with the $11 million US budget he was given for A New Hope... he did quite well wouldn't you say?

Considering SW has arguably the largest fanbase of anything ever, I'd think that'd be a safe assumption..

I dunno, depends on what you mean by fanbase, which I'm not sure of anymore.

Which is pretty much what it is, like Spiderman or PotC or Shrek now...cept it makes more.

Heck, Star Wars makes more on years when it doesn't have a movie out than other franchises do around release dates.

Yup. I should remove Spiderman from that somewhat though since the first didn't really work as a standalone film. I mean I guess it could from a point, but there was alot going to a sequal. It's still a cash cow though. Just hoping 4 is better than 3, which may require a few changes...

Well, I know the movies are high grossing, but does the whole of the Spiderman franchise really make all that much dough? I don't really see a whole lot of movie merchandise.

Well I didn't mean like that, cuz it doesn't as far as I know. SW is in it's own league.

Man, I can't even think of a single movie or television franchise that even comes close to the ammount of stuff out there for Star Wars.

It depends on where in the world you are... Can you compare SW to Godzilla in Japan?

In terms of total profits from anything Star Wars related, then Star Wars shoots all movie/television franchises out of the water... but in terms of only movies and/or television franchises, it is definitely one of the biggest but depending on where in the world, possibly not THE biggest.
