But that would indicate to me that Star Wars was always planned to be a trilogy, even though the other two chapters weren't assured. And trilogy is an inefficient term, as the plan was nine chapters.
You make a good point, considering the nine chapter layout. But from a production standpoint, ANH was made with no consideration to the other two films. They'd sorta be a "pleasant surprise." Which is why I say as a movie, it wasn't meant to be a trilogy. Because the first one was made as though it'd be the only one. And the first draft of the story one contained one chapter. Yes, by the time it was filmed, there were three scripts for three stories. But there was only one film on the drawing board. Which is where I'm coming from.
