As I posted previously in my blog, my mom and I went up to NJ for the meeting with our cancer Dr, Dr B, today.

Dr B told us that while there has been shrinkage in the tumors, by no means are they all gone. Dr B also said that, thank heavens, the tumors are contained in the lungs, and have not spread to any other organs, or places in the body.

Dr B further stated that he wants us to have a consultation with Dr C, who does direct radiation, instead of the chemo my mom had been receiving previously. Dr B said that he wants Dr C's opinion as to whether to do direct radiation now.. or perhaps.. nine more chemo treatments, and direct radiation later. Dr C was the initial Dr we had seen on TV in the first place, which got this whole process started back last June, and then at that time, after tests, they decided to do chemo, which is done by Dr B, instead of the direct radiation that Dr C does.

Dr B said that there is no way of knowing if the delays with weather, the hospitalizations, and such, have caused the situation to be worse than it would have been otherwise. Obviously, such was out of our control.

All in all, Dr B classified the outcome so far as "Fair to good". He said that while he would have liked to have seen more shrinkage in the tumors, he is optimistic that my mom is, knock on wood, not coughing blood as she had been, and has not lost any more weight. He was also infatic when he said that "Unless you have an unexpected heart attack or stroke, Sheila, you are not in danger of dying from this now.. or anytime in the forseeable future".

So, next Friday, we will be going for a visit with Dr C. Until then, we have just been told to go on with life as we have been.

My mom and aunt seemed very positive about today's meeting. I would classify it as "Cautiously Optimistic".

Anyhow, so that's the situation for now, until hopefully next Friday. I will post updates as they occur. Thanks for the support I have received.

Well cautiously optimistic is pretty good at this point I would say. Cancer is a long long battle but it seems you are winnng the war. So I am happy for both of you. I hope the good news keeps coming for you both my good friend.

Thanks for your good wishes, kurch, my friend. I appreciate your support as always.

It's interesting: You mentioned the words "Winning the war". That's exactly what Dr B said to us today. His feeling is that if things get better, and not worse, it is winning the war. However.. he did state his opinion, obviously, that he wants to explore more and aggressive treatment, to hopefully arrest this situation altogether. Depending on what Dr C says next week, Dr B did tell us that whenever my mom's next doses of chemo are, whether now.. or after radiation, Dr B is going to change the chemo drug being given to her. I left out that part. He said the new drug of chemo that he wants to try, .. wont make her lose her hair when he gives it to her. He said we would get into any side effects of that drug later on,. after we see what Dr C has to say next week.

Thanks again, kurch.
