I recently became a Vegetarian, and it has made me feel so much better. I have more energy, I feel healthier, and I feel great knowing that I am doing something good for animals.

Any fellow Veggies out there?

Give me a 20 oz. cowboy cut t-bone steak and I'm in heaven.

Raises hand....hi there Krokus! I don't eat farmed animals, but I do eat some kinds of fish. One friend calls me a fishavegetarian.

slacker - don't make me come after you. :xpulcy:

Quiet, you! :smilestar

I'm like LK70: I'm a vegetarian, but I also eat fish.

I also smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol. :upsidedow

I'm impressed! (No, not one myself)

Don't have the discipline yet myself, but I won't touch veal or lobster at the very least... If I know "food" is tortured to death (that's especially unacceptable...) :xlime:

I try to "use" cage-free hens/eggs, also --- No reason in this millenium for "food animals" to be tortured for mass production.... If I'm kept sitting, standing or *squished in one position for 30 minutes I'm very uncomfortable,
can't imagine not being able to move for weeks... or months.... :shake:

and forget dropping anything living into boiling water. :sowrong: I wonder who first tried that... Normally more peaceful, I had to work not to backhand a classmate in middle school who gleefully commented he'd put a lobster in backwards to hear it scream... 😡
I've recently been told that's *not just "steam," though must look for more data (already gathered...).

I have a good friend who's a vegan, won't even use leather, puts me to shame for sure! Simply because she loves animals, especially cows...
And she'll never comment upon what anyone else eats either, or wears.
Took quite a while to discover this about her, in fact...

I'd never impose these thoughts upon anyone else either... I know a vegetarian must be very careful with sources of protein, etc., and experimenting with myself is entirely different than (with family or friends) since I have no idea regarding long-term effects, but I'm sure there are enough "older" vegetarians to ask

But don't ask me to buy tortured puppies in certain Asian countries (no offense, that's what I found) except to rescue... They actually do that to "soften the meat," I wish I was kidding.... :Grrr: That began in wartime/famine, and continued, unfortunately....
There were petitions circulating, haven't seen one in a while, maybe that means by some slim chance that mega-barbaric practice was stopped...?

Britain is known for (better/best?) treatment of "food animals." At least if they're treated well, and it's quick.... (THAT much *should be a Given). 🙁

Especially when they're actually intelligent, and sensitive -- sentient. (Like dogs, ugh, not going there again). Don't ASK what I saw Wolfgang Puck do to a live crab on TV.... though I'll probably post it eventually...

Always admired Ed Begley Jr. --- Years ago, saw him interviewed.
He was *THEN driving a completely electric car (for years) and he won't eat "anything with a face."
(That's it, I really have to kick the junk food... as I'm thinking of it yet again... Damn colorful packaging...)
At least, if higher life forms ever descend upon us looking for sources of protein, you vegetarians should be allowed amnesty (or the first escape pods...) :smilestar

Yep...

Count me in! I gave up eating meat 15 years ago, although I still eat fish. I tried giving up fish aswell a few years ago but couldn't manage it, shamed to say.

I don't preach to meat eaters and expect the same in return, thank you... to each their own.

I even cook it for family/friends that do eat it, I didn't give up eating meat as I didn't like the taste, I did like the taste, I gave up because I watched a program one night on how the animals were 'fattened' up and slaughtered and I just cried because how the animals were being treated and I was appalled by this and decided there and then that I wasn't gonna eat meat again, and haven't. I also haven't looked back either.

I'll chime back in and say I also have no problem with people eating meat around me. Prime rib kinda makes me sick, and I may ask you to prop your menu in front your bloody plate, but other than that...😀

And when my dog got old and wouldn't eat dog food anymore, I made spaghetti and meatballs for her all the time.

I believe animals eat other animals - and no matter how much some people would like to deny it, essentially humans are animals. It's just that we tend to eat way more than is healthy for ourselves or the planet.

Much like slacker though, health and longevity of the planet aren't big concerns of mine. I just can't bear the reality of factory farming methods.

And actually I do eat pretty healthy, but only to keep my fat ass from being really fat and so I can last longer in a decent tickle session 😉

Actually, I think I'd love to become one.

At the risk of making my dear friend in the post directly above me snicker, I think such an accomplishment would be truly monumental on my part. It would require a sea change of massive proportions. It would be especially hard to do in this house, since Mrs. Knox is, in my opinion, a passive enabler of some of my worst habits, and hey, it's hard to do shit like this alone.

Well, sixteen years ago, as of last Thursday, I smoked my last cigarette...thus chucking a three pack a day habit with little or no pain or crisis. Maybe I can do this, too. Would take a massive overhaul of things...

If you are worried about the welfare animals, how they are treated in life as well as how they die, you should probably become a vegatarian. Or at the very least, you should avoid eating animals and animal products from American industrial agriculture. The conditions they live in are abominable, the the so-called "free range" chickens from industrial organic producers.

If you are interested, I would highly recommend the new by Michael Pollen, The Omnivore's Dilemma. He goes into great detail about the various food production systems in American, including the industrial agriculture system where most people get most of their food.

For the record, I am not a vegatarian, though I try to eat more vegetables and less meat. I do this mostly for health and environmental reasons.

If this is your concern, you should definitely avoid eating pig products. Pigs are much more intelligent that dogs are.

Yes, thanks for the book recommendation! I was acutely aware as I was writing that that, as I admitted, I'm a bit hypocritical here as I'm aware of the brutality of the system but haven't been yet able to completely kick the habit, only avoiding the worst? examples... So I understand all too well how difficult it is to change eating habits, especially when one doesn't witness the brutality, and it's all so cheerfully packaged...

Guess I was trying to semi-appease my conscience by sharing what I do know, here; unnecessary cruelty should at the very least be illegal.
Even if people don't seek to change what they eat, at least they might seek to make the process easier & more humane, if they're made aware....

Actually I have for quite a while already, for that very reason (but I figured I went on & ON enough already, and probably sounded too "preachy," even for a non-vegetarian... 🙄 )

(though as I wrote above, I don't discuss this sort of thing out of context, I've dated lobster enthusiasts... but since the subject was raised here, in this box I thought I could comment a little more freely)

...so I omitted that information -- Thanks for calling attention to it.

That is so sad! :dropatear I do eat meat, but not fish or any other seafood. I am tempted to be a vegetarian because of the cruel conditions the animals lived in before their deaths. *shudders*

If you can be a semi-veg, count me in. I probably haven't touched anything that would pass as "steak" for 25 years. I literally hate it. But I have the occasional veggie burger and chicken and I do enjoy fish... :idunno:
XOXO

Welcome to the most compassionate choice you will ever make!

I've been an ethical vegetarian for over 8 years, and I have got to say it is the decision I am the most proud of in my life. It can be difficult at times, and there will be moments where you may or may not backslide (my weakness is seafood...bad!), but you are making a step closer to true love towards all living creatures, and your own health.

Feel free to send me a PM or instant messege, I'd love to hear from a new vetggie :happyfloa

nothing against the veggie lovers of course, but I must have my meat. I'm not fond of factory farm products, but i eat whatever's available. if i had a choice, id stick to the organic and real farm products.

i also loooove lobster.... 😱

Not exactly sure what a "cowboy cut" is, but if that means it's thick, juicy and ready for grillin', count me in.

No offense to anyone who is vegetarian, but every one I've ever met had a very unhealthy pallor about them to say the least. The majority of them were preachy, self-righteous pricks too. Humans are omnivores, like bears. They need both meat and vegetables to be truly healthy. I admit, I don't eat as many veggies as I should. But forgo meat? NEVER!!!

I avoid the veal too, but as for the lobster...

Hmm. As far as I know, it is just steam escaping the carapace as it heats suddenly. It's certainly not a scream in the literal sense of the word, because lobsters don't vocalize.

Besides, my grandpa taught me that you shouldn't put the lobster live into boiling water because it would make the meat tough as it took too long to die. Better to chop its head off with a cleaver first. :wiseowl:

Hey, stop looking at me like that! :wow: Just try to tell me Grandpa's way isn't more humane! :imouttahe

...Damn it, now I'm suddenly craving steak and lobster.

With maybe a pound of snow crab legs on the side. 😀

I gave up red meat when I turned 13 for many reasons. The main one being, I don't like it, and never have. The other being I'm not a big fan of how livestock are treated, and I became more aware of it when I lived in Minnesota for 4 yrs. Then to top it off, my grandfather took me to the beef kill floor for John Morrell's when I visited. Absolutely appalling and disgusting.

The only meat I eat is organic, free range chicken or turkey and fish, mainly tuna. Generally we buy our chickens from local colonies where they are not only organic and free range, but they are not mutilated for transport.

I do hold the belief that each person has the right to choose what they eat, except when something is tortured for their benefit, such as veal and certain seafood.

I am a very picky eater anyway. All I have to do is think about what is in something or where it came from to turn my stomach so I no longer desire to eat it. Icky food!

Unhealthy pallor? Lots of you have met me...do I seem unhealthy to you?

And slacker, this whole thread is full of vegetarians who say we firmly believe everyone should make their own choices about what they eat and we don't have any problems with their choices. How does this translate into preachy, self-righteous pricks? I actually do take a bit of offense at that.
