Well, the situation: I've been out of work since May 01 (my employer went broke), and some serious health problems followed straight up. Since July 02, I could have taken up work again. As it's difficult as hell for a 46 year old guy to get re-employed somewhere, I applicated for a special re-integration program the German authorities offer.

Today, I received the denial. Seen realistically, this was my last chance to get employed in the present bad economic situation. My unemployment support runs out in March, then I'm on welfare check. Probably for the rest of my life, as it seems. I'm deeply depressed about this, and as I haven't got anyone to talk about this, I just need to let off some steam here.

Nothing you can do to help me, but thanks for listening anyway.

Sorry to hear about this bro. Man, this could happen to many of us, you just never know! Maybe something will come up for you.🙁

Tim

Hal, I wish there were something I could do. You've put up with more shit than I could imagine, yet still keep plugging along. You've got to keep your head up and spirits as high as you can get them. I know it's easier said than done, but maybe some positive feedback can give some level of insight. Let me know if you just want to talk, bud. I'm always an E-mail away.

*hugs* Hal, I don't know what to say other than I am so sorry to hear this. I have said a prayer for you, and I will continue. Praying that something will come along, like Dave said keep your chin up and if you need to talk I am also just an e-mail away.
Wishing all the best Hal! *hugs*🙂

Well...

You've always got the residuals from your TV star appearance, right?😉 I'm not sure I quite understand why you can't continue to seek employment on an ongoing basis? There's people here who take a "mediocre" job in whatever field is hiring, and then pursue a better job for whatever period of time it takes to land something in their preferred field. 46 isn't old...better not be since I'm well beyond it..lol! I realize your health issues may limit your choices a bit, but isn't there some data entry or computer related field you might explore? I know you have those basic skills, and much more, since we've had about a dozen conversations through the years on various computer issues/problems/fields....

Heads up man! Remember, you're a Tkphile, and we never surrender!

Hey Hal, sorry to hear about this, but I agree with Q, there's GOT to be something out there for ya! Don't give up, 46 is quite a young age. Good luck! 😀

Things are not much better here in the US. I have been out of a job since last summer and I have sent literally hundereds of resumes but not a response. I had my first interview in about 4 months yesterday.

So pray for me too, guys and gals.

Good luck to you too, TM. I hope you get the job you're seeking. 🙂

I hope I get **any job**. Right now, the way I feel is, if it's a job flipping burgers at Wendy's, I'll take it.

Hal,

There is too much to write right now, and it would most probably annoy the other members of the Forum for me to write one of my long-worded posts in this context. Please look up my e-mail address and let's trade some time with you, or meet me in the chat room (we'll need to schedule it because I'm so popular and all)

I promise you that I don't want to get financially involved with you in any way; I don't have a multi-level-marketing scheme, nor do I want you to give me any contacts or whatever.

Try the chat thing. If you don't like me you can always walk out on me and that will be the end of us.

Believe me, I've been there. I'll give you my time, and I think you'll approve.

We don't have a confidence problem, now do we?

Thanks all for your kind words, folks. Just for a background info: Jobs are organized quite differently here in Germany. It really resembles the medieval guild-system, there are almost no odd jobs for people who haven't learnt or studied for the exact field. The few unskilled jobs require manual ability, and I've got two left hands with five thumbs on each one.

Additionally my health situation forbids me to do a lot of things, and yes, Q, 46 IS rather old when there are several hundred young, fit people are applying for the same job, all capable of working 60-80 hours a week, healthy, stress-resistant, and ready to believe everything they are told...

I've got 25 years of experience in the tourism business and related areas, and I'm one of the best in my area. But experience counts nothing in a world made for fit young people, I'm afraid.

But at least your comments cheered me up a wee bit, thanks!

I dunno much about Texas( or Germany either. lol )..but if people have lawns with grass, and , and/ or bushes , well....lets just say that a person my mom's b/f knows does lawn care stuff like mowing lawns, trimming the bushes...and..what's that other thing?.."bushhogging"? guess that's a machine for the really big plants and stuff than needa be cut ( like when grass is up to your ass. lol )...and get this...he has to TURN DOWN jobs because he already has enough.

And one of my sis's friends does some of that stuff...and he works pretty much only when he really needs the $$.

Maybe if you find a friend or two who has a riding lawnmower ( if that's needed...some yards where I live need those since they're big) and the right kinda trailer to pull that kind of stuff with...who knows, you might be able to at least do ONE of those things (while the other person can handle another part of the lawn..like one person mowes, the other trims the bushes) ...while your friend does another in the same yard.

And according to both my mom's b/f and my sis....that kind of thing pays good $$(My mom payed someone 120-something dollars just to have a peice of property's overgrown bushes and plants cleared! Just ONE piece of property..)....Man...workin your own hours, choosing who you want to work for, bein your own boss (or bosses, since it'd probably help to have a friend or two helpin . lol ) , making decent $$ (and if you use it right, it could be great for ya. lol)

I know I'D sure as hell love to get into that kind of thing.

😀

That was just a suggestion...if you decide to do that, great, if not, I'm sure you guys will find something else anyway. Just don't give up.😉

I know what you mean about the old stuff Hal. I'm 44 and looking for a less stressful job but no one wants to higher a 44 year old chemist. Its almost like I'm 84 or something like that. I have a ton of experience as well and you are right its like that doesn't count. I think its basically companies just don't want to pay for experience at least for right now. I think the economy will pick up but it will take time for it to affect employment. I hope your situation improves Hal. I wish I could be of more help.

46 is a great number..

It happens to be the first half of my screename as well as the title to my favorite song! Just a suggestion, I don't know much about this, but a relative of mine moved to Spain through this website: http://www.internationalliving.com/ Maybe you can find some work in a related field elsewhere. They try to sell real estate to you first but they also list places for rent in other countries. Just a thought to maybe send your resume's elsewhere where you might be in demand.
God bless and I hope all works out.
-Phil

My regrets Hal. No way to sum that up but: "That sucks."

About if you need to talk.

Three cheers for Hal!

Sorry to hear about your woes, Hal. I know in the West it is almost encouraged to change careers at your ungodly old age 😛 , but is this viable in Germany?
And what aboot working outside Deutschland? Do you have kids you would have to re-locate? Is your name really Hal?

So much we don't know aboot you...

And, btw, my uncle is turning 70 this year, and he's still captain of his cricket team, so shaddup! 😉

Cheers.😀

P.M.S. Please don't say you will be on welfare for the rest of your life; that's a bad omen.

IT MUST be so different.

My Uncle just opened a consulting firm at the ancient age of 53.

My mother finished college at 51.

My dad is opening a new business and *GASP* he's 59.

I can't imagine how horrid the conditions of the country would be that you can't find a life sustaining paycheck!

I can only hope that you find something worth your energies, Hal. Maybe you should consider relocating if your future is in such a dire situation.

Good luck!
Joby

Hal, you are a very bright, very good man. if you are having these troubles then it’s the fault of the economy and your area for not valuing intelligence and experience.

Aw, Hal, brother, I'm really feelin' for ya, man. My condolensces on your situation. I hate bein' without employement, and your country sounds like a rough place for such. That'd suck at most any age, and just gets worse when the playin' field is crowded wit' players.

I hope your situation improves soon. In the idle time, having been stuck in such a situation myself due to immigrating to Canada, might I suggest takin' a spot of time to investigate a former interest? Writing (prose, poetry or music)? Reading? Excercising? There's much, I've recently realized, for a man to do on VERY limited finances. It sucks to not have what was, but we're men past our youth, and have already seen what was become what is. What is works for me. Ain't as fast, or as strong, nor is it many other things that youth was. It's still what I prefer, and it STILL rocks.

Heck, now might be a great time to organize social events for our interest, in your country. I know of one of your countrymen, besides you, that is into tickling. Who knows? You might find a connection to a gig, through another means.

Hope, brother. I mean t'give you hope. Was given t'me, and I'm s'posed t'pass it on. It helps, hope does. You can be so many things besides what you've already done. I hope for you that your situation is or becomes at least as good as mine, 'cause with the hope, it's pretty good. When I can gig again, it'll be better still, and financial lulls aren't forever.

You have many of us to mail. Some of us can easily comiserate, and hope to inspire. Mail me, Hal, if ya want to. I'm around, and happy t'be of any help I can.

Peace,

dvnc
