what is SHEMP?

Goodness! I can't believe the level of hate and discontent this has raised! Even if some didn't find it funny, it really didn't hurt the overall functioning of the forum. Some of you guys are waaay too serious for a forum based around a subject that's supposed to induce laughter, and that's coming from a person who has a tendency towards being boringly logical and stoic at times. Perhaps we should have an annual Spock day, instead?

I understand that some will not find the Shemp stuff amusing. Humor is subjective. What <i>I</i> find amusing about the Shemp stuff--at least THIS YEAR'S stuff, is that for everything tickling/feet related, the words were substituted for something else. It could've been ANY word, but it happened to be Shemp. I'm having a bit of a block here trying to explain... I didn't even THINK to check the story forum to see all the edits. I know this is a forum related to tickling, but it's funny to me to see how completely absorbed we can get into a subject (in this case, tickling) to have a few words substituted that shows us just how much the subject comes into play. That probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since it IS a tickling forum, and we SHOULD be talking about it if we're here, but nonetheless, it amused me. It was like smurfs talking!

You get upset just because a little prank was played. By one of the people that PAY FOR THIS FORUM WITH THEIR OWN MONEY TO KEEP IT FREE FOR ALL (AND I MEAN ALL) OF YOU!!!

1 day a year, and they (he) has to ASK YOUR PERMISSION!?! He needs to clear it with the ENTIRE FORUM to ensure no one thinks it is "not funny".

Ok, so I guess for next year he (they) are supposed to send out a PM to EVERY MEMBER..

Hey guys, just wanted you to know after I continue paying for updates, server maintenance, electricity, bandwith, bulletin updates and all is set I am going to have a little fun on July 5th. What I plan on doing is <snicker> replace the TMF with.....ready for it.......ready...A PICTURE OF A Treasure Troll and call it the Treasure Troll Forum!! Yeah, and I will replace everyone's signature with different treasure trolls for 6 hours. From noon EDT untill 6pm EDT.
Hope you all enjoy the prank, even though now you know. Oh if you don't like this idea PM me and Ill sort through all 80,000 or so of them and then I work on a consensus idea...and maybe we would be able to do it by July 5th 2029.

NO I AM NOT SORRY
You all take this forum for granted. All the updates, things you see, all the bandwith used to post clips and store them. All the archives, artwork, smilies....the list goes on and on.

1 day people, 1 FREAKING DAY.
The owner wants to do something amusing, not for a clique, not for a paycheck, not for the freaking queen of England. Just because he wants to have a little fun and MAYBE......MAYBE put a smile on someone's face.

People talk about "THE FORUM HAS CHANGED FOR THE WORSE". A few years ago when the first Shempfest happened, there was not too much BITCHING about it. Everyone pretty much took it good fun and not much at all yelling about cliques and crap like that. Now people have to worry about having a little fun on 1 day and being labeled and having people dump all over it.

Also let me get this straight......my signature gets changed with a giant blinking taco head and other defacement, and ITS FUNNY!! HA HA!! They are messing with Rob!!! That is sooooooo funny.

People will either laugh or get mad. I missed the substitution part; I would have loved to have seen my name is SHEMPnemesis. 😀

I remember last year's. A LOT of people got pissed off about that one. I know I got ticked because I didn't fully understand what was happening or why. Now I know. It's an annual prank. You can bet your ass it'll happen next year. You can either laugh at it or get mad.

I rather laugh because being mad wears me out. 😀
 
Eh, I think the problem most people are having is that they don't feel involved. I mean, for this to be forum wide it is a pretty big deal. The fact that they weren't involved at all makes em feel hurt and unwanted, after all, every member has as much a voice as another member. I mean, where would this place be without it's members. Anyway that's all I'm shempin-er...saying for now.

Ah, excuse me, but how can YOU say that WE are getting upset after the message you just posted? We're just saying that we find the prank unfunny and annoying (which it is for most people). You're the one who's yelling in bold letter and a size 36 font. You of all people should know how rude that is. I truly believe you're overreacting

Aside from lacking humor and being annoying, there's also the fact that, from the point of view of someone who isn't aware of the Shemp "joke", there was no way for us to know that this wasn't an actual attack on the TMF, perhaps just the first phase of something more serious. Have you ever thought of that? Forums have been brought down that way, at least temporarily, and I for one don't want that to happen. It's obviously not the case here, but there was no way for most of us to know that, and I can't say that I appreciate it.

Now, just because me and a number of people aren't happy about it doesn't mean we think it's a huge deal. We're not foaming-at-the-mouth mad about it. But unfunny is unfunny, or simply just too obscure. An inside joke limited to a thread is just fine. But when it affects the entire TMF just to amuse a few, I think we're entitled to complain about it a bit, or at least express our concern about what's going on.

I have absolutely no problem with altering the logo or posting a few joke things around the forum. I have a huge problem with my personal space being invaded. Leave my private messages the fuck alone. Same thing with my blog and old postings. If you find this selfish of me, so be it. But do not indirectly force me to be part of some prank that I have absolutely no interest in.

First off...size 7 font. I was not upset at the joke, I am upset that people are taking the prank seriously. I am taking people reactions seriously (which I assume is what they want, to be taken seriously). And yes, damn right I know its rude. And like you said I of all people should know. Why, because normally I do my best to be balanced and decent to everyone regardless of how long they have been around or what they may have done in the past. This was to show how serious I am about it. I am known for joking around most of the time and being sarcastic others. I wanted to imply how much it does bother me that people are taking a little prank (little compared to last years) so personally. It has nothing to do with anyone, but the person who pays the bills wanting to have a little fun. It caused some problems and I understand they were taken care of quickly. Like within a hour to clear up other issues.

Humor is all perspective. Just because you do not, or others do not find it funny does not mean no one found it funny. Myself...to be honest found it funny (I know no surprise there) but I will say I may have done something funnier if I was the one doing it. But we will never know......
And if it was an attack, as in the past the MODs have ways of letting us know quickly when there is a problem and keeping us informed. It has happened in the past and I am sure they will continue to do so.

Ok, now we all know that around the July 4th weekend every year there will be some forum wide tom-foolery. But you see to tell people exactly kind of ruins the prank. 1 day year...is that really too much to ask. 1 day a year.

Your not. That is what makes it a prank. A practical joke. You do not call someone and tell them, hey when you come home I put a bucket of water above your door. Or, hey before you shake my hand, I want you to know I have a joy buzzer in it.
That is what a prank or practical joke is. You do not tell everyone what it is or when it is going to happen.

I have no idea where shemp came from. I don't get the joke. I don't know where it started or who started it or why. And guess what, my panties still fit, my knuckles still crack and cell phone is still a massive piece of shit. Looks like my world is still revolving despite having no idea what this shemptastical day is all about.

Everybody needs to chill the shemp out. Every party needs a pooper, but nobody likes the pooper.

YOUR messages, YOUR blogs and YOUR posts are only yours because you happened to write them. You don't pay for the space they take up. You don't maintain the PM and blog features. You don't do shit but sit behind your computer and type a few keys. If they come in and change your grocery list to "I need a dozen SHEMPS - 4 bags of SHEMP - a gallon of diet SHEMP - and a pound and a half of SHEMP" THEN you can bitch about your space being invaded. This forum is not your space. It's the space of the people who keep it up and running so you CAN message, blog and post. They don't owe you anything.
